These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. They may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

These positions are located in Denali National Park and Preserve in the Maintenance Division.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is May - September, but varies during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, and/or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May, 2024.

You must apply to each duty station you are interested in working at and to each grade level you want to be considered for.

Selectees may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries.

Applicants selected for Denali County will be duty stationed at Wonder Lake, AK.

Positions may not be filled at every duty station.

Duties for the WG-07 position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate a variety of single-motor vehicles including light, medium, and heavy-weight trucks, with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 on steep and varied mountainous terrain. Vehicles primarily include dump trucks (some with dual transmissions).
  • Occasionally perform semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance and repair such as plumbing repairs; touch-up painting; minor carpentry; and minor repairs and preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • May assist with manual labor such as digging, pulling, cleaning drainage ditches; lifting and emptying trash containers; cleaning rest rooms; picking up litter; cleaning picnic grills; works roads and trails in connection with raking and graveling.
Duties for the WG-08 position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Operate a variety of motor vehicles, including those having a GVWR of more than 32,000 pounds and towing trailers with a GVWR of greater than 10,000 pounds.
  • Operate vehicles on steep grades, winding roads, and varied mountainous terrain. Vehicles primarily include tractor trailers and dump trucks (some with dual transmissions), operated within close tolerances, driving and backing over uneven ground and in narrow or congested areas and between buildings and other vehicles.
  • Occasionally perform general laborer duties such as washing vehicles and equipment; cleaning with push brooms, wheelbarrows, shovels, and rakes; loading and unloading supplies by hand or with forklifts or loader; operating chainsaws; and repairing road shoulders and ditches by hand.
Positions may require living and working out of a remote road camp for several days at a time.

Physical Demands: Moderate physical effort is needed by this position in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavy loads or a large number of people. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools.

Working Conditions: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • For the WG-07 position, you must possess and maintain a current, valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL). For the WG-08 position, you must possess and maintain a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
    • CDLs must include tanker endorsements, no air brake restrictions, a current medical examiner's certificate, and no pending disqualifying offenses. You must upload documentation showing these requirements are met with your application based on the grade(s) you are applying to.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Occupancy of government quarters is required for those that are selected for Denali County (Wonder Lake) and Toklat, AK.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

You must meet the Selective Placement Factor(s)/Screen Out(s) below to qualify for the position(s) and upload the required documentation with your application to demonstrate your qualifications:

For the WG-07 position, you must possess and maintain a current, valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements, no air brake restrictions, a current medical examiner's certificate, and no pending disqualifying offenses.

For the WG-08 position, you must possess and maintain a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements, no air brake restrictions, a current medical examiner's certificate, and no pending disqualifying offenses.

You must include a copy of your current, valid CDL showing you have tanker endorsements and no air brake restrictions as well as your current medical examiner's certificate showing no pending disqualifying offenses. If you do not include this information, you will receive no further consideration for these positions.

In addition to the above, to qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Additional information

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax. Salary subject to annual review and adjustment.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position may be suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster with prior supervisory approval.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1039 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1039 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1039 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
