  • Implementing forest restoration projects involving fuel and biomass reduction.
  • Operating chainsaws to thin trees 20 inches diameter or less. Buck and limb downed trees.
  • Chip wood debris and construct burn piles.
  • Assist with prescribed fire and pile burning.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • This position has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and your work schedule is subject to change from part-time to full-time to on-call as workload dictates.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • Occasional Travel may be required. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.
A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.o

Physical Demands: Heavy exertion is often required, and much work is performed in rugged mountainous terrain. Incumbent must have:
  • Ability to bend, lift, carry large objects such as rocks and logs weighing up to 50 lbs. solo and more than 100 lbs with others.
  • Ability to dig into rocky and gravelly soil using hand tools. Tool operation may be repetitive and require standing or crouching for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate power equipment and small-scale heavy equipment which can be tedious, repetitive and bone jarring.
  • Ability to carry a heavy pack over mountainous terrain for up to 15 miles a day.
Working Conditions: Work will be performed in both wilderness and front country areas. Work includes walking and backpacking in mountainous terrain and working in inclement weather conditions. Incumbent must be capable of hiking over 15 miles a day for several consecutive days and negotiating with map and compass.

Incumbent may live and work in isolated mountainous wilderness areas, in close contact with small groups of people, over extended time periods. Incumbent must work outdoors at elevations from 2,000 to 13,000 feet in all extremes of weather. Front country living conditions can range from a canvas-walled tent cabin or other shared Park Service housing units.

Restoration work is dusty and hazardous conditions exist when moving rock or fallen and bucked trees or working around pack animals or heavy equipment.

May perform physical labor on wildland and prescribed fires as qualified and available.

Incumbent must actively participate in an effective safety program to safeguard visitors, employees, environment, facilities and equipment. Hazardous conditions often exist when weather is wet and muddy, and when working around pack animals and heavy equipment. Incumbent encourages safety consciousness in employees, volunteers and other work groups at all timesThe National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
