Help

As an IT Specialist within the Geologic Hazards Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Lead and coordinate the implementation of security programs across platforms and establishes vulnerability reporting criteria.
  • Draft and/or develop operational policies, procedures, and criteria for interfacing with resources, and coordinates with other staff.
  • Develop and provide compliance oversight for implementation of systems cybersecurity policies, guidelines and procedures related to web-based applications, network, and systems designs.
  • Advise and provide technical oversight and assistance to staff in carrying out security development, implementation, operations, and maintenance requirements.

Qualifications

Individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

  1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

For GS-13:

Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level: Possess at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.

Examples of relevant experience may include maintaining documentation IT system boundaries; serving as Information System Security Officer (ISSO) or Information System Security Manager (ISSM) for annual Assessement and Authorization (A&A) of an IT system; participating in IT control review boards; giving IT system security briefings; tracking, managing, and resolving IT system vulnerabilities and Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M), working with stakeholders and administrators to resolve security issues; configuring and maintaining assets and reports; and using tools such as Tenable, Acunetix, BigFix, CSAM, and/or Exacta.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
