Help

As a Mechanical Engineer GS-0830-12, with the National Park Service (NPS), your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research, investigations and assessments of a variety of structures, including historic and interpreted structures, fortifications, visitor centers, museums, lodging facilities, and administrative buildings.
  • Develop professional engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare treatment and preservation alternatives and plans.
  • Provide technical input into and oversight of professional architectural/engineering services contracts.
  • Direct in-house and contractor construction, restoration and preservation projects.

Qualifications

In order to be qualified for this position, you must meet one of the following basic requirements:

Possess a Bachelor's or higher degree in engineering from a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET.
OR
Possess a Bachelor's or higher degree in engineering that included differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
OR
Possess current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT)1, or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. (Applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.)
OR
Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)2 examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
OR
Successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A.
OR
Successfully completed a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology. In addition, I have at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

In addition, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level preparing project plans for construction/maintenance projects in accordance with professional engineering standards; analyzing technical data to recommend a particular course of action to preserve, stabilize or rehabilitate a structure; monitoring work completed by contractors or other staff to ensure it meets the negotiated agreement/technical guidelines; and preparing a variety of documentation (e.g. drawings, permit applications, treatment plans) to support construction/maintenance projects.

PLEASE NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts or a complete list of college courses taken that identifies each course, college or university, semester or quarter hour earned, grade received, and date completed. If you fail to submit, your application will not be considered, and you will be rated ineligible.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST:
1. Clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, title of position, starting and ending dates of employment (month and year).
2. Must reflect work schedule as full-time and/or part-time and the total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time or part-time).
3. If part-time, (the number of hours worked must be indicated) and will be pro-rated to determine the amount of qualified specialized experience.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

A written agreement must be signed between an agency and an employee under which the employee agrees to complete a specified period of employment as a condition to receive an incentive.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
