Help

  • Serves as the principal authority to the Park Superintendent, Senior Management Staff, Regional Office, and Washington Office in stewardship activities related to the park's cultural and natural resources.
  • Provide an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to Cultural Resources Management.
  • Provide overall professional and technical direction for the park's cultural resource program.
  • Administer policy and programs for history, historic structures, cultural landscapes, archives, maritime archeaology, library programs and museum management.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/05/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-13 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

Basic Education Requirements: History 0170:
Education: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in history; or a related field, that included at least 18 semester hours in history. MUST INCLUDE TRANSCRIPTS.
-OR-
COMBINATION: Possess a combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major in history or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination demonstrates that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.

Basic Education requirements: Museum Curator 1015:
EDUCATION:
Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in museum work; or in an applicable-matter field (Museum Studies, Art History, Museum Management, Art, Curatorial Studies, Design for Exhibition or Museums, Conservation Studies, Arts Management, etc.) MUST INCLUDE TRANSCRIPTS.

COMBINATION:
Do not possess a 4-year degree in museum work; however, I have a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
-OR-
EXPERIENCE:
Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown above.

The following requirements are those used by the National Park Service and have been previously published in the Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61. The qualifications define minimum education and experience required to perform identification, evaluation, registration, and treatment activities. You must meet the requirements of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for History.
The minimum professional qualifications in history are a graduate degree in history or closely related field; or a bachelor's degree in history or closely related field PLUS one of the following:
A. At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, teaching, interpretation, other demonstrable professional activity with an academic institution, historic organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution
OR
B. Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of history.

-AND-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:managing and overseeing a complex cultural resource management program that includes significant volumes of library volumes, archive records, and museum objects; conducting research to determine best practices for planning and stewardship actions (conservation, preservation-including consumptive use); preparing clear and detailed written reports of research findings, planning documentation, and stewardship activities; ensuring proper systems are in place to meet requirements of compliance standards (National Environmental Policy Act or state equivalent, National Historic Preservation Act or state equivalent) overseeing access to, and preservation of, cultural resource objects. . You must include hours per week worked.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Physical Demands: Although most of the incumbent's duties do not involve unusual physical requirements she or he is occasionally required to do strenuous physical effort. May also drive vehicles, and lift moderately heavy items.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed in an office setting but some work is performed outdoors and on piers, ships, and boats. Travel and overnight stays are required occasionally/rarely.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
