Summary

Ozark National Scenic Riverways is located in the heart of the Ozark Highlands of Missouri, in the southeastern portion of the state on the Current and Jack's Fork Rivers. The park features 134 miles of crystal clear, spring-fed rivers that are flanked by scenic bluffs, low mountains, and numerous springs and caves. Recreational opportunities abound and include kayaking, "tubing", fishing, hunting, and swimming. Hiking and mountain biking trails are plentiful in the area.

Park Headquarters in located in Van Buren, Missouri. Limited shopping, medical, and dental are available. For more shopping, medical, dental, and entertainment Popular Bluff and West Plains, Missouri are approximately 40 miles from Van Buren. Summers are warm and humid and winters are normally mild. Major attractions are located in St. Louis, Springfield, and Memphis two and half to three hours away.

This position will serve as a front-line, uniformed representative of the NPS, answering visitor questions and explaining the area's recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services, concession operated facilities and services, campground availability, hiking trails, etc.

Perform assignments in accordance with all NPS and U.S. Treasury regulations governing the handling of government funds.

Operate an electronic cash register, computer, or Point of Sale (POS) system to conduct financial transactions; perform opening and closing functions; issue entrance receipts, tour tickets, permits, etc.

Complete shift reports to verify money collected, accountable stock sold, and all machine transactions from the shift using shift accountability, receipt tapes; create accountability records (e.g. Excel spreadsheets) of fee collection transactions.

Inventory and/or restock fee program supplies and assist with placing orders and preparing requisition requests for equipment/supplies needed.

  • You must be a student CURRENTLY accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on at least a half-time basis and in good standing (minimum overall Grade Point Average of 2.0).
  • Pathways participant agreement is required.
  • You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Your work schedule may vary from full-time to part-time or leave without pay while attending school.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-03/03/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience. To be eligible for this pathways position you must:

  1. Be enrolled in a degree seeking program
  2. Be enrolled on one half (1/2 time basis)
  3. Have a minimum 2.0 grade average
  4. Attending an accredited education institution
  5. Provide transcripts with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
  6. Be enrolled for the next semester/quarter following the period of this vacancy.
To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of general experience. defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates my ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a Recreation Fee Clerk (Fee Collection). My general experience includes collecting and handling cash, checks, and credit cards and can accurately complete standard mathematical calculations, greeting the public, providing information, and giving directions. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two (2) years of education above high school (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours). This education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university.
IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must submit a copy of your transcripts that identifies for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade received, and date completed. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit specific coursework information as described, your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. (A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected).

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, six (6) months of the general experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and one (1) year of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) as specified above, equals 100% of the total requirement. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts as indicated above).

SELECTIVE FACTOR:
This position performs money handling duties, and experience with money handling is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. Experience with money handling must be described within your resume.


Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Pathways Requirements: If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment.

Physical Demands: This position requires standing for long periods of time, as well as walking, bending, and lifting of moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue may occur due to the high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. If applicable, extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue or emergency response duties.

Working Conditions: This position typically works at an entrance station, campground office, visitor center, and/or visitor contact station. Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain, or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods.

Conversion: Although we do not currently anticipate this position to continue after you have completed your educational requirements, if you successfully complete your internship, you may be eligible for non-competitive placement into a term or permanent position if one should become available. Conversion into a term or permanent position is neither guaranteed or implied, but successful completion of your internship will give you the eligibility to be converted.
