As a Supervisory Geophysicist within the Geologic Hazards Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Providing supervision and oversight for the design, assembly, installation, and maintenance of global and US networks acquiring digital, broadband data for earthquake monitoring, tsunami warning, and scientific research;
Designing and developing plans and requirements for new geophysical data systems and programs; schedules manpower, materials, and facilities, and ensures resources are available for the completion of complex technical projects;
Participating in scientific and diplomatic liaisons and the development of site agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs)' and,
Maintaining contacts within the USGS and with other government agencies.
Work in remote locations may require significant travel for durations of one to three weeks in conditions ranging from the extremes of the tropics to the Antarctic, and ranging up to 10,000 ft. elevation, with hiking into some sites. Lifting of up to 90 pounds may be required. Maintenance, repair, and adjustment of electronic equipment requires delicate work with hand tools, careful reading of meters and oscilloscopes and visual inspection of small components.
Incumbent may be exposed to inclement weather and associated hazards. Some conditions might be described as stressful at times because of remoteness or varying conditions encountered. Foreign field work will generally also involve non-English communications.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR

The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original or ongoing geophysical studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, scientists have extensive knowledge of the principles of geophysics, exhibit a highly developed ability in their application, and have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
