Summary

This is an indefinite, Excepted Service appointment that may continue as long as you meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available.

Help

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct developmental assignments in various phases of Land Surveying.

Major Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Compiling and tracking data; assisting with the development of reports; and conducting simple recurring analyses and tests.
  • Recording instrumentation readings and results of analyses; and assisting higher-graded Land Surveyors by preparing graphs, charts, diagrams, and visual presentations
  • Operating various electronic distance-measuring devices, surveying equipment, and other survey tools while performing basic measurements.
  • Utilizing surveying mathematics and calculations, both plane and geodetic to conduct work activities.
  • Communicating in a clear succinct manner to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Working with a diverse array of people, including team members, general public and tribes, other agencies, and other offices within the organization.

  • You cannot hold an active real estate license, nor can you have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Lands.

Qualifications

Though Pathways Participants are eligible for noncompetitive conversion to the competitive service upon successful completion of their Program and any other applicable conversion requirements, service in a Pathways Program confers no right to further employment in either the competitive or excepted service.

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and education requirements described below.

You must provide documentation to support your eligibility and education to include a school letter of acceptance -and/or- official or unofficial transcripts.

Pathway's Internship Eligibility: To be eligible for this position, you must be an individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842. Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are met. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of half an academic/vocational or technical course-load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this Program. (You must provide documentation of your enrollment).

AND

Education Requirement for GS-03: Successful completion of at least one full academic year of post-high school study (Note: You must provide copies of your transcripts.)

Education Requirement for GS-04: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree. (Note: You must provide copies of your transcripts.)

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

Note: One full academic year of undergraduate, graduate, vocational, trades, technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. The high school curriculum must be approved by a State or local governing body. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Additional information

During holidays/summer interns can work full-time and during the school year the work schedule will be changed as needed to part-time or Leave Without Pay (LWOP).

Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor.

Physical Demands: The work of this position requires physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous, and densely vegetated. You will be required to efficiently lift and carry equipment necessary to perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food, and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles. Office work is primarily sedentary.

Working Conditions: The work of this position is typically conducted in an office setting that has adequate lighting, ventilation, cooling, and heating. When performing fieldwork, the student trainee is subject to adverse weather conditions, extreme terrain, pests, and animals that can present a hazard. The student trainee adheres to all safety rules.

Telework: The Bureau of Land Management has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
