This position is located in the Water Resources Division. The purpose of the position is to enhance and populate the NPS' Hydrographic and Impairment Statistics system by performing a wide variety of tasks involved in the development of cartographic products including, but not limited to data collection, compilation, editing and production of Geographic Information System (GIS) based maps while also providing GIS technical support.

Summary
This position is located in the Water Resources Division. The purpose of the position is to enhance and populate the NPS' Hydrographic and Impairment Statistics system by performing a wide variety of tasks involved in the development of cartographic products including, but not limited to data collection, compilation, editing and production of Geographic Information System (GIS) based maps while also providing GIS technical support.
The major duties of the Cartographic Technician position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Visits field sites to gather information, utilizing accepted field mapping techniques.
Inputs both routine and complex spatial and non-spatial digital data to draft format, field compilation, CAD or GIS.
Performs necessary and proper verification and checking procedures to ensure the resultant database or drawing files are as free as possible from error.
Plots data to meet user's requirements for various kinds of displays.
Makes plots to check and verify the results of map file construction.
Produces user-ready original or derived thematic maps in variable formats and media at various scales with appropriate symbols, legends, and title blocks.
Produces publication-ready materials with appropriate printer information, collation sheets, layout, paste-up, and photograph preparation.
Operates, updates, and maintains CAD/GIS software, hardware, and associated peripheral devices.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience must include ALL of the following activities: processing cartographic and GIS data using ArcGIS; compiling digital and analog information from specified sources; assembling and sorting material into a complete map; performing geospatial analysis; and providing technical support and training. You must include hours per week worked. -OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least ONE full year of graduate education that includes courses directly related to the work of the position, such as cartography, relevant mathematical and statistical sciences, or related sciences, e.g., physical geography or geodesy. You must include transcripts. -OR-
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Physical Demands: The work requires long periods of sitting in front of computer terminals. Some prolonged bending, crouching, lifting (up to 50 pounds), climbing and reaching are required to perform routine hardware maintenance and move equipment. Digitizing data requires extended periods of standing, sitting and stretching over large drafting tables while recording/measuring map data with a computer mouse.
Working Conditions: The work is usually performed in an office setting. Outdoor field work in varied climatic and terrain conditions is required. Occasional field visits may create exposure to a variety of physical settings and may require adequate clothing.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
