Summary

This position is part of the Transmission Services (T) of theBonneville Power Administration, Department of Energy. As a Student Trainee (Electrical Engineering), you will be involved in periods of pertinent formal education and periods of employment in an occupational engineering field as a part of a formal student employment program. The incumbent will participate in the BPA engineering rotation program and complete assignments in at least two functional areas.

As a Student Trainee (Electrical Engineering), you will:

  • Perform a variety of tests in accordance with established methods. Adjusts and operates test equipment of proven reliability. Applies standardized test procedures. Records instrument readings. Determines whether the test data fall within normal limits. Determines the apparent causes of deviations in the test data resulting from equipment malfunctions, observational errors, and other causes.
  • Analyze and present data in accordance with established methods. Extracts data from a variety of prescribed but non-standardized sources. Recognizes errors which are readily apparent (e.g., misplaced decimal points and reversal of algebraic sign) but which require a limited knowledge of the subject matter. Processes the data according to well-defined methods and designated formulas using elementary algebra and geometry in addition to arithmetic.
  • Assemble, install, and maintain instruments and equipment.
  • Participate with engineers and other professionals in meetings relating to the review of engineering elements of assigned projects.
  • Accompany engineers and other professionals on field inspections of in-process and completed work.

  • Must be in good academic standing (G.P.A 2.0 or higher).
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.

  • Interns will be on a trial period for the duration of the appointment.

  • As a Pathways intern you will be expected to work during your summer, winter and spring breaks unless otherwise coordinated with your manager.

Qualifications

GS-04: To qualify, you must have completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study OR an associate's degree. (1 full academic year is equivalent to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.)

You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Conversion: Pathways Interns may be converted to a term or permanent position upon program completion. This is not automatic nor guaranteed; it is at the discretion of the employing office.

To be eligible for conversion, an Intern must: (1) be converted within 120 days of successful degree completion; (2) be a U.S. citizen; (3) complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Program while enrolled as a half/full-time degree/certificate-seeking student, or meet exception; (4) meet the qualification standards for the position to which converted Engineering Series, 0850 all-professional-engineering-positions-0800.pdf (opm.gov); (5) receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the agency; and (6) meet agency-specific requirements, as specified in the Participant Agreement.

Education Requirements:

Your educational goals must include obtaining a professional degree inElectrical Engineering.

You must submit a copy of your current transcripts with major being pursued for proof of education and enrollment. If you are not currently enrolled but have been accepted for future enrollment, you must submit a copy of your acceptance letter with your application.

NOTE: This Pathways Internship will have a tentative start date in May/June of 2023. If you graduate before October 2023, you will not be eligible for this Pathways Internship Program.

Academic Degree Training Program (ADTP):The Academic Degree Training Program (ADTP) is part of the overall planned, systemic and coordinated program to provide employees (student employees and regular workforce employees) effective education and training to improve performance and accomplish strategic goals.   • Transmission (TD) Pathways Interns - GS-0810 Civil Engineers
  • Transmission (TD) Pathways Interns - GS-0830 Mechanical Engineers
  • Transmission (TD) Pathways Interns - GS-0850 Electrical Engineers
  • Transmission (TD) Pathways Interns - GS-0855 Electronic Engineers
Eligible employees must also meet criteria set in Bonneville Power Administration Transmission Student Engineer Development program and all other regulatory criteria.

  • You must be a Student Trainee (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineer) in the Bonneville Power Administration TD Org. to be eligible to apply.
