Help

  • Coordinates with park staff and stakeholders to develop interpretive content for wayside signage and exhibits that effectively communicates interpretive themes to visitors.
  • Takes part in the development of exhibits, as well as studies appropriate park interpretive planning documents and discusses the proposed exhibit development with the park staff and consultants to gain a basic knowledge of park interpretive themes and resources sufficient to effectively conduct exhibit planning and production projects.
  • Researches and prepares content of interpretive media and assure factual accuracy support of project goals and interpretive themes, assembles, and tracks.
  • Examines all exhibit plans before finalization to assure that factual data are correct; grammar, spelling, and punctuation are correct; and usage and style meet the criteria for well-written exhibit text. Coordinates the selection of graphics, artwork, and photographs used in interpretive media, exhibits and tangible objects.
  • Assists with the development of long-range interpretive plans, bringing expertise for exhibits and publications. Writes interpretive planning documents and proposals. Serves on interdisciplinary planning teams and may coordinate planning team activities. Writes and publishes interpretive planning documents and proposals.
  • Stay abreast of and apply emerging technologies, DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) principles, and accessibility standards.
Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary, although it may require hiking over rough terrain, aerial inspection of park areas or other such activities necessary to provide adequate background for the incumbent on the nature of the resource the incumbent is interpreting through exhibits and media.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in modern office and studio facilities, with some travel required.

This is a CAREER-SEASONAL POSITION, therefore you will be guaranteed at least 26 weeks of work, but not more than 50 weeks in a service year. The season is expected to last 11 months, beginning early February until late December. It is anticipated that the employee will be in non-duty/non-pay status for up to 2 pay periods (4 weeks) in the month of January. An employment agreement will be executed prior to the employee's first day of work and may be reviewed annually.

Telework: National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. *Please note: This is NOT a full-time telework position.

  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/11/2022-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).
Specialized experience is experience that demonstrates exhibits design concepts (such as museum exhibit design, graphic design, etc.) and project management. Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include: museum exhibit design, graphic design, project management, and long-range interpretive planning (related to exhibits, audiovisual plans, concept/site plans). You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, if related with major study in illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position such as museum studies. You must include transcripts. -OR-
Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of completed graduate education beyond 2 years by 18 (or 27 for quarter hours). Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

In order to be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.

Nongovernment housing: may be available for rent in the local communities of Groveland, Mariposa, Midpines, Bootjack, Oakhurst, and Catheys Valley. El Portal is a small community bordering the west side of Yosemite National Park and 15 miles west of Yosemite Valley.
