Duties:

As a Research Ecologist/Wildlife Biologist (Assistant Unit Leader) within the Wisconsin Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Planning, conducting, and directing research related to wildlife or ecological resources, with application to contemporary science, policy and management needs.
  • Conducting research that is cooperator driven and provides scientific basis for management and policy decisions.
  • Serving as subject matter expert in wildlife ecology, providing leadership and guidance to government and private agencies and university representatives through participation in meetings, conferences and work groups.
  • Disseminating research results via final reports, peer-reviewed print scientific journals, online scientific journals, books, book chapters or other outlets. Make presentations on findings to scientific and conservation organizations.
  • Serving as graduate faculty member, contributing to both the research, graduate student mentorship, and teaching mission of the university.
  • Operating a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Desirable candidates will possess the following: A Ph. D. that is directly related to quantitative ecology with a focus on wildlife, including (1) demonstrated ability to build an applied research program focused on quantitative wildlife ecology, designed to inform the management, and/or conservation of wildlife; (2) a demonstrated ability to effectively teach and employ statistics, modeling, and robust quantitative techniques toward applied research questions that may include: frequentist and Bayesian approaches, machine learning, network analysis, capture-recapture techniques, occupancy modeling, integrated population modelling, integral projection modeling, spatial/habitat-dynamics modeling, and programming in R or other systems; (3) capacity to conduct collaborative and/or interdisciplinary research at both local and regional scales in collaboration with state, federal and university research scientists to address wildlife conservation and ecology questions and improve understanding of wildlife populations, including population dynamics, disease processes and interactions with their habitats and human populations (e.g., population dynamics, sustainable harvest, overexploitation, climate change effects on wildlife, wildlife climate resiliency, loss of habitat connectivity, habitat change or loss); and, capacity to develop and implement novel quantitative tools to generate actionable insights to improve the management and conservation of wildlife populations and their habitats; (4) experience in successfully designing, planning, and conducting field research resulting in an effective, peer-reviewed, synthesis.

The applicant will work closely with University, State, and Federal cooperators of the Wisconsin Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit to help meet collective diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

The applicant will be required to maintain a graduate faculty appointment with the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and participate on university and graduate committees, advise graduate students and post-doctoral scientists, and other tasks that are shared by departmental faculty. The applicant will also work in close collaboration with research scientists in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources - Office of Applied Science

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR ECOLOGIST - GS-0408

Applicants must meet the following to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

**One year of appropriate specialized experience that is in ecology, biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled.

Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) design, development and conduct of protocols to analyze spatial and temporal data; 2) conduct of sampling, experimental design, statistical analyses and biometrics relative to wetlands ecology; 3) independent planning and conduct of comprehensive biological studies/investigations and requests for proposals; 4) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques and procedures; 5) serving as a technical resource on biological issues; 6) design and management of projects, studies to provide an understanding of the effects of environmental perturbations in study areas.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST- GS-0486

Applicants must meet the following to satisfy the basic education requirement for Research Wildlife Biologist, all grade levels. Research positions: Degree with major in wildlife biology, zoology, or botany that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in biological science and 15 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and earth sciences. This course work must have included:
  • At least 9 semester hours of training applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, principles of population dynamics, or related course work in the field of wildlife biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in zoological subjects such as invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, embryology, animal physiology, entomology, herpetology, parasitology, and genetics; and
  • At least 9 semester hours in the field of botany and related plant science; and
  • At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, soils, and/or geology.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in wildlife biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) independently planning and conducting comprehensive wildlife biological studies and investigations; 2) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques, processes, and procedures; 3) serving as a technical resource on wildlife biological issues. For examples 1-3, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.

Ph.D. Requirement

In addition to meeting the basic education requirements described above, in order to receive consideration for this position, you must also possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in wildlife science or a closely related field of study appropriate for this position.

To verify the Ph.D. requirement, transcripts or verification from the university registrar must be submitted that clearly state: Ph.D. awarded, major, and date of conferral. Failure to provide this information will result in your application receiving no further consideration.
