Summary

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately February-December and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Help

  • Perform moderately heavy physical labor requiring the use of common hand tools and power equipment involving any or all of the following duties:
  • Operate heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, portable snow blowers and all types of hand tools (such as shovels, rakes, lawn edging equipment, etc.) to maintain buildings, grounds, trails, etc.
  • Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc.
  • Move furniture, remove and set signs, paint picnic tables and signs, rake and water lawns, trim trees and shrubbery, pick up litter and/or clean fire pits.
  • Dig ditches and trenches with pick and shovel; occasionally break up pavement, soil or concrete; mix and power concrete, asphalt and hot/cold mix; fill and level holes in damaged roads.
  • Move heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; use heavy-type power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning and oiling.
  • Cut heavy trees with axe or chainsaw; stack heavy logs, lumber and sacks of cement, etc., or perform other duties requiring similar judgment and comparable physical effort.
  • These positions must on a regular and recurring basis also operate light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, etc) to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work sites located on the park.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
  • You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

  • Contiguous-to-area Requirements
    • Individual must be certified as maintaining a permanent and exclusive residence within, or contiguous to, a field activity or district, and whose residency is expected to continue, indefinitely, without change.
    • As a minimum, the applicant must indicate their place of physical residence for the past two (2) years as being contiguous (adjacent to the boundary of the park).
    • Individual must be dependent for their livelihood primarily upon employment available within that field activity (at the park).
    • Both conditions, regarding residency and dependency, must exist and be made a matter of record on the Certification of Living Contiguous to the Area form at the time of tentative job offer Contiguous Form.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period..
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
