This position is a XB-7 Work Leader located at the Sandy Flat Sub-District for the Blue Ridge Parkway. The work leader leads and directs the work of a crew consisting of XA-7 maintenance workers, XA-5 maintenance workers, and seasonal maintenance workers performing a variety of work assignments including carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, masonry, electrical, custodial functions and mowing and vegetation management.
Area/Duty Station Information
The Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 miles along the crest of the southern Appalachian Mountains through North Carolina and Virginia between two eastern national parks - Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains. Watauga County, North Carolina - Blowing Rock and nearby Boone, North Carolina (Watauga County) are small to medium sized mountain towns with schools, stores, doctors, and the Appalachian State University available locally. Watauga County is regarded as a premier regional tourist destination and attracts visitors and seasonal residents from all over the Southeast. Many outdoor recreational opportunities are available locally including, hiking, rafting, and fishing, as well as three ski resorts. Adequate housing is available in the commuting area, at varying prices. Larger cities such as Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Asheville are approximately 1 to 2 hours away with larger hospitals, airports, and more entertainment activities. Average winter temperatures range from 20-40 degrees with moderate snow and ice; average summer temperatures range from 60-80 degrees with high humidity.

You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You must possess and maintain or be able to obtain and maintain within 18 months of appointment, a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License.
Obtain and maintain a current NPS Working Sawyer certification within one (1) year of appointment.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms. Where surfaces are to e coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach requiring incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside where dirt, spray, fumes are present. Also required to work in extreme weather conditions and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Frequently exposed to the potential risk of broken bones, shock, burns, cuts, and bruises.
