Summary

This position is part of the Office of Science. As a Computer Scientist, you will provide leadership for programs that identify and implement innovative methods for transitioning computer science and networking research advances into tools and software useful to scientists; and identify issues and actions necessary to effect this transition with emphasis on interactions between scientists, next generation computational facilities, high speed computer networks, and next generation hardware.

Duties

Help

As a Computer Scientist, you will:

  • Serve as a recognized scientific computing authority and expert resource in networking research and in computational science which encompasses diverse areas of physical sciences, applied mathematics and computer science; to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs in this field on a national and international level.
  • Serve as Program Manager determining scientific focus and direction of next generation networking research preparing calls for proposals, organizing independent peer reviews, recommending funding allocations, organizing Principal Investigator meetings, serving as a liaison on committees, and monitoring scientific progress of the program.
  • Examine and ascertain the pioneering research needs and opportunities of the research program against scientific and technological advances in next generation networking research including quantum communications and advanced wireless communications such as 6G and related Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, workflows and cybersecurity systems that can catalyze the advancement of the development of hyperconnected smart scientific instruments, experiments, and network infrastructure.
  • Evaluate contractor, DOE laboratory, and grantee research proposals and performance through merit reviews, site visits and panel reviews.
  • Prepare, justify, and support the portions of the budget relating to computer science and networking research.
  • Select and ascertain the qualifications and suitability of peer reviewers for proposed new programs and on-going programs.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service (GS-14) or equivalent in the private sector . Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience:

  • Examining and ascertaining the pioneering research needs and opportunities of a research program against scientific and technological advances in next generation networking research including quantum communications and advanced wireless communications such as 6G and related Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.
  • Conceiving, justifying, planning, and coordinating research, establishing goals and objectives and providing leadership and direction for programs with national and international scope and impact.
  • Leading the development of research in computer science and networking, that stimulates interest in greater participation and collaboration in the computer science and networking research program, and disseminating information developed through the program to the science and technology community.
  • Evaluating contractor, laboratory, and grantee research proposals and performance through merit reviews, site visits, and panel reviews.
  • Developing, coordinating, and organizing funding allocations for scientific or technology programs.

Basic Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

Evaluation of Education:
Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be reviewed by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
