Duties

Help

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and/or overhauls major components and systems such as engines, transmissions, differentials and transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, emission control systems, and related computer assisted electrical, electronic, braking, hydraulic, fuel, and other assemblies. Following instructions contained in technical manuals tears down, adjusts, repairs, reassembles, and runs operational checks on components of these systems.
  • Using a wide variety of electronic diagnostic equipment, conducts tests and analyzes test results on vehicle systems and components. Conducts independent research to diagnose drivability and performance issues; determines the best diagnosis and repair methods to reliably correct the issue.
  • Disassembles, repairs, replaces, reconditions, and rebuilds components of the various systems, and makes independent judgments based on specifications in technical manuals and on accepted trade practices.
  • May assist with, or prepare, monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, job reports and vehicle labor and parts forms. Prepares reports using the computer using such programs as Word, Excel, and the FMSS programs.
  • Performs vehicle and equipment operation checks in order to determine safety deficiencies or service requirements of all park vehicles and equipment.
  • Removes and installs vehicle add-on accessory items, such as lights, radios, gun racks, toolboxes, and truck bed racks.
  • May be responsible for inspecting, repairing, and overhauling small engines and other components on items such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, pumps, cement mixers, motor cycles, ATV's and other related park equipment.
  • Responsible for neatness and organization of work area and assigned tools; parts control and inventory, immediate clean up of any oil spills or other hazards that may present a hazard to shop personnel.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses, certificates, and any applicable endorsements as required by the Park.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You must be able to obtain a Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License within 1 year of appointment..
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 night per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Physical Demands: The incumbent is required to make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward and uncomfortable positions, and the work performed frequently involves standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles and making repairs in other tight spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally moves moderately heavy items weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices.

Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt, dust and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts and strains. To reduce the dangers and irritations from these conditions, the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes and glass and respirators.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
