As an Ecologist for the Alaska region fire management district, you will:
Participate in park and regional planning efforts for fire management, fuels management, and resource management planning efforts.
Develop and prepare fire monitoring plans with objectives to adequately monitor fire and fuels management activities
Prepare, implement and supervise remote field projects, including use of helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, and boats
Manage and input field data collected into computer databases, utilize GIS and GPS systems for data collection and management.
Analyze data collected using standard statistical analyses and write management and scientific reports and present results to management and outside audiences.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at both the GS-9 and 11 grade levels you must possess the following minimum qualification by close of the announcement:
Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. You must include a copy of your transcripts.

For the GS 9: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: conducting ecological or vegetation monitoring studies; managing and entering ecological data into database systems; assisting in analyzing ecological data and preparing reports for management. You must include hours per week worked in your resume.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position. To combine education and experience, first take your graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 18 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. For the GS 11:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: developing and conducting fire ecology, fuels, or vegetation monitoring studies; managing and entering ecological data into database systems; analyzing ecological data and preparing reports for management; assist in writing planning documents for fire or land management. You must include hours worked per week in your resume.

EDUCATION: three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD degree or equivalent doctoral degree in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position. You must include transcripts.
-OR- A combination of education and experience as described above. To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of credit hours in excess of 36 semester hours or (54 quarter hours) by 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal at least 100% to qualify using this option. You must include transcripts and hours worked per week.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
