Help

As a Hydrography Science and Applications Lead within the National Geospatial Program/ Topographic Data Services Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Leads development and guides implementation of national-level strategic and technical plans related to the hydrography theme of The National Map.
  • Plans include developing long-term objectives and goals for the portfolio of the nation's hydrography datasets and providing technical direction throughout implementation. -
  • Coordinates with senior technical and program personnel in the USGS and other organizations to plan, implement and monitor strategic and technical plans.
  • Serves as a senior hydrography technical expert and spokesperson for The National Geospatial Program. Represents the U.S. Geological Survey at both internal and external meetings, including technical meetings with key stakeholders and professional conferences.
  • Develops and maintains an understanding of state of the art in hydrography science, data models, applications, and technology issues.
  • Provides senior-level technical guidance, consultation, and advice to managers on strategic direction for NGP programs based on knowledge and experience with a range of users, partners and other stakeholders, and through participation in the activities of the national hydrology and hydrography communities.
  • Participates on NGP committees and special study groups. Conducts studies/analyses to address special issues of concern to the Chief, TDS. The studies weigh policy considerations, relationships with other organizations, and political impacts of the recommendations offered.
  • Coordinates with Federal, state, local, and other partners and users to respond to and influence the direction of community-wide hydrography science, applications and related data development.
  • Communicates with NGP and operations staff about external hydrography-related developments and uses this information as a primary driver for strategic and technical planning both near- and long-term.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT GS-0150: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geographer, all grade levels.
1. Degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

2. A combination of education and experience-- courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semesters hours in geography or related fields, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT GS-1301: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/ or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-14 level: One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

To qualify you must have at least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility performing the following:
1. Provide senior-level technical guidance, consultation, and advice to managers and users on developing and/or applying the portfolio of National Hydrography Datasets.
2. Coordinate with Federal, state, local, and other partners and users to respond to and influence the direction of community-wide hydrography science, applications and related data development, discovery and access.
