Help

Duties of the incumbent include, but are not limited to:

  • Serves as Project Archaeologist supervising archaeological work including record searches, survey and site documentation, test and data recovery excavations, construction monitoring, laboratory analysis, data entry, information synthesis, and professional reporting for prehistoric and historical archaeological resources.
  • Maintains professionally adequate records, maps, photographs, and other documentary materials; supervises daily operations of field and laboratory projects, reviewing work of others for accurateness, timeliness, and consistency with Yosemite standards.
  • Prepares archaeological project scopes of work, research designs, management summaries, and fully-professional reports.
  • Assists with preparation of, or prepares, archaeological documentation for Section 106 compliance purposes; assists park cultural resources staff with consultations with the State Historic Preservation Officer, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and park-associated Native American tribes.
  • Maintains proficiency in current developments in archaeological method and theory, including archaeological research in the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin conducted by other agencies and contractors; and assists supervisor with planning, scheduling, budget programming, and tracking of archaeological research.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work overtime.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST when the applicant cut-off is reached (which may be sooner than 08/12/2022).

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

SELECTIVE FACTOR:
1. These positions require the incumbents to be physically capable of working in extreme weather conditions; working and camping at high elevations for extended periods; lifting and carrying heavy loads of up to 50 pounds; and backpacking for extended periods over rough terrain. The incumbents must have, and MUST demonstrate in their resume, that s/he possesses wilderness travel and living skills. This is a selective factor, and you must certify your ability to perform these duties.

Basic Requirement: This position requires that applicants meets the Basic Requirements outlined below.

A. EDUCATION:

  1. Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher that included 3 semester hours of each of the following course areas:
  • History of Archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques). Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.
-AND-
  • Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); or surveying;
-AND-
  • Archeological field school.

2. Related Curriculum: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archaeological field school).

B. EXPERIENCE: At least four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience includes archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience includes a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-level archaeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archaeological project.

C. COMBINATION EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience that provides knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate additional education or technical experience to total 4 years. This combination demonstrates that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archaeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study.

To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: applying the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of archeology to the conduct of prehistoric and historic archeological field investigations and cultural resource projects in the Mojave and Colorado Deserts of the American Southwest which included the preparation of survey reports, site recording forms, site maps, overlays, field notes, and using GPS and GIS. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Master's Degree or completion of all requirements for a Masters or equivalent graduate degree. To be qualifying, graduate study must have been in archeology, anthropology, or other closely related field. The total education offered to meet this provision must have provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the work of this position. 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study is considered to be equal to one full year of graduate education. You must include transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of a combination of graduate level education and experience as described above. Note: Only graduate level education in excess of the first year is creditable for combination.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

Physical Demands: Work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking and bending often required. Heavy items (packs and equipment) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis, e.g., overnight backpack trips, 2-8 days in duration. Carries 45lb pack for up to 10 miles per day, carries a 30lb pack for up to 15 miles per day. Hikes in steep terrain and in isolated areas, occasionally at altitudes up to 12,000 feet. Works at high altitudes, often up to 10,000 feet and occasionally up to 12,000 feet. Works outside in temperatures often up to 95 degrees and occasionally up to 110 degrees. Work may also be performed in inclement weather e.g., thunderstorms in summer and snow storms in winter with possible overnight stays. Incumbent must be able to hike on rough, obscure trails and must be able to carry pack weighing 30-45 pounds.

Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas. Major portion of work will be accomplished in an outdoor setting with some discomfort because of weather conditions and walking over rocky, uneven terrain. Flying in helicopters is possible.
