This position is part of the Office of Science - Office of Scientific and Technical Information, Department of Energy. As a Student Trainee (General Engineering), you will:

  • Work with other engineers to gain skill in carrying out engineering assignments and solving problems of limited scope and impact.
  • Carry out research to collect material/documentation for technical reports.
  • Compile factual data to support engineering efforts and performs basic calculations and computations.

  • Must be a student, accepted for enrollment or enrolled, and seeking a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on at least a half-time basis.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • This employer participates in the e-Verify program.

  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
  • Interns will be on a trial period for the duration of the appointment.
  • A Pathways Internship Participant Agreement is required.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • The selectee has the ability to work part-time or full-time hours during the fall, winter, and spring and full-time hours during the summer.

Qualifications

The position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program within the Office of Science. This Internship Program provides students who are enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in a wide variety of qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work and explore career paths related to their academic fields of study or career interests, (ie., Engineering).

Education: You must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment seeking a degree from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution. You must meet the below education requirements:

GS3: Completion of one full academic year of post-high school study.

GS4: Completion of two full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.

You are required to submit a copy of transcripts and proof of enrollment.

This is an internship position NTE 30 SEP 2022, with the possibility of extension or conversion to a term or permanent position; however, conversion or extension is not mandatory or guaranteed. Internships may be extended through the school year based on workload requirements and budget availability. This appointment does not confer permanent federal status. You may be eligible for conversion to a term or permanent position in the competitive service after successful completion, provided you satisfy the program requirements, and work and funding is available.

To be eligible for conversion, an Intern must: (1) be converted within 120 days of successful degree completion; (2) be a U.S. citizen; (3) complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Program while enrolled as a half/full-time degree/certificate-seeking student, or meet exception; (4) meet the qualification standards for the position to which converted; (5) receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the agency; and (6) meet agency-specific requirements, as specified in the Participant Agreement.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
