Duties

Help

Serves as regional wildlife biologist
Lead and/or collaborate with park units on natural resources studies, inventories, or monitoring projects
Provide guidance and technical direction to park personnel working on natural resource projects and studies.
Develop work plans and schedules, scopes of work, cost estimates, and proposals to justify funding requests to accomplish natural resource goals.
Work with parks to identify research needs, write funding proposals, collect field data, analyze data, and write reports or peer reviewed publications
Contribute to sampling design, data collection, and statistical design for field inventory or monitoring projects
Create summary statistics, conduct statistical analysis, and interpret statistical results for applied wildlife research and monitoring purposes using statistical software for analysis of univariate and multivariate data, ArcGIS database applications, and other database management software.
Participate in and/or lead meetings with external partners on issues of mutual concern.
Present information as a representative of the National Park Service at meetings, conferences, or symposia, regarding scientific studies.
Write articles, newsletters, and/or project updates and/or briefing documents on monitoring or research projects for the purpose of communicating complex scientific information to a variety of non-scientist audiences.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
Basic Requirement: This occupational series requires the applicant to possess degree and required coursework as outlined below OR a combination of education and experience.
You must include transcripts that show the required coursework and the credit hours for each course. Possession of a degree in biological sciences that included: a least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects such as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
-OR-
Possess a combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
- AND -
To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include duties such as: participating in the planning and execution of ecological or biological studies with a limited number of variables; performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; conducting studies using established fact-finding and evaluation procedures; conducting long-term monitoring of biological or ecosystem components; design, develop, test, and implement scientific monitoring protocols; developing scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects; or developing and carrying out statistically valid data collection protocols.
You must include years, months and hours per week worked in your resume to be found qualified.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level of this announcement.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking,
climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically
dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which
entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be
performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves,
firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and
helicopters is possible.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
