Gateway National Recreation Area (GATE) was established in 1972 as one of America's first urban national parks and encompasses nearly 27,000 acres of land and water, including bay and ocean shoreline in New York and New Jersey. With a remarkable concentration of cultural, natural, and recreational treasures, the park provides a wide array of recreational and educational activities for the metropolitan population, as well as large numbers of national and international visitors. The park includes a wildlife refuge, mature maritime holly forest, ocean dunes and coastal uplands, former military fortifications and facilities, and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the United States. Visitors enjoy ocean beaches, organized sports, fishing, hiking, bicycling, nature study and a chance to explore the area's important cultural heritage. More than 20 million people reside within a one-hour drive of the park. Annual park visitation averages 9.5 million.
Working with peers or alone, these positions perform a variety of tasks relating to natural resources, i.e., water, land, plants, animals, and soils. Assignments are performed within established methods, techniques and procedures using standard scientific equipment. Such tasks might include: field observations of vegetation, fish and wildlife resources; collection of field data; inputting data into spreadsheets and performing quality control on entered data; conducting field surveys to document and assess resource management issues; using a variety of computer programs including Excel, Access and Geographic Information System (GIS) software to compile and report data and other resource management information; habitat management activities including invasive plant control, native plant installation and site preparation; assisting with photo documentation of projects; and education and outreach to park visitors to foster shared stewardship and protection of park resources; and, compilation and presentation of educational programs to staff, volunteers and the public.
Gateway National Recreational Area Pay Scale: $45,423 - $52,976
Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area (BOHA) is a unique partnership park that encompasses 34 islands situated within the Greater Boston shoreline. The islands are rich in natural and cultural resources. This is a place where you can explore tide pools, walk through a Civil War era fort, climb a lighthouse, hike lush trails and salt marshes in the ancestral territory of the Massachusetts, camp under the stars, or relax while fishing, picnicking or swimming...all within reach of downtown Boston. The 34 islands are managed by a unique, 13-member partnership that includes the National Park Service and other public and private organizations. An advisory council provides a mechanism for public involvement. The office is located in downtown Boston, and park lands are accessed through multiple departure points including downtown Boston, the Charlestown Navy Yard, the South Boston Seaport, UMass Boston, Quincy, and Hingham. The work also involves carrying tools and materials to field sites, the ability to navigate to various docks and offices in the Boston Harbor area using vehicles and/or public transit, and frequent transit on small landing craft boats.
Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area Pay Scale: $40,436 - $52,565
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 or 1730 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
Physical Demands: The work requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking, hiking, or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending; crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching to observe, collect, or record field data; or in some situations the work may require physical exertion to scuba dive or operate a boat. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds), must be lifted and carried on routine basis.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office or outdoors. The work performed involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
