This position serves the Inventory and Monitoring Program of the Sierra Nevada Network (https://www.nps.gov/im/sien/index.htm), in support of the Natural Resources Stewardship and Science Directorate. The Ecologist will conduct and participate in long-term monitoring of flora, fauna, physical resources, and landscape dynamics within the network parks. Incumbent will provide scientific expertise for the vegetation monitoring program and will serve as an authority on the principles and application of ecosystem science and plant ecology. They will oversee implementation of long-term monitoring of high elevation forest and wetland vegetation including data collection, management and analysis, and reporting and presenting the findings to a wide variety of audiences ranging from scientific peers to the general public. They will also design and lead studies directed at documenting and understanding ecosystem change in montane and subalpine systems. Provides planning and project supervision for the vegetation monitoring program, which includes hiring, training and supervision of field technicians as well as the development of work plans and budgets.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/27/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

To qualify for this position, you must meet both the Basic Education requirements for the Ecologist, 0408 series AND the minimum experience or education qualification for the GS-11 grade level.
Basic Education Requirements for the Ecologist, 0408 Series:Successful completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's, or higher degree, in the major field of study in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. You must provide a copy of your transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: vegetation management, forestry, vegetation monitoring, rare plant monitoring, ecological monitoring, invasive plant management, rare (e.g. endangered) plant species recovery, and habitat restoration. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management or chemistry, which is directly related to the work of this position and demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. You must include transcripts. -OR-
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described (50% of the experience requirement), and 45 semester hours of directly-related graduate level college study in an accredited institution as defined above (50% of the qualifying education). Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here.
