Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to operate one or more motor vehicles, which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 26, 000 pounds and up to 32,000 pounds. The vehicles operated by this position meet the definition of a commercial motor vehicle, and the incumbent of the position is required to have a commercial driver's license (CDL). This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) and is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Help

Incumbent will perform a variety of work involving the operation of motor vehicles in support of the maintenance and repair of roadsides including roads, culverts, bridges, guardrails, etc. Operates diesel and gasoline powered motor vehicles and heavy equipment which typically have a gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds and up to 32,000 pounds; vehicles are usually equipped with air brakes. Operates vehicles, including dump trucks and trash truck, in all kinds of weather over rough terrain, in close quarters, and in heavy traffic. Duties include crack sealing, asphalt patching, refuse/recycling collection, transporting material, and loading trucks with front end loader and/or backhoe. Operates tractors with attached flail and sickle bar mowers to cut grass and brush on shoulders, ditches, and cut banks alongside park roads. Performs operator maintenance on all vehicles operated according to manufacturer and park standards. Completes minor repairs and preventive maintenance of equipment. Performs manual labor tasks such as digging, raking, cleaning drainage ditches, picking up litter, etc.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Vehicle Operation: You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Government Housing: May be available.

SCREEN OUT: Have experience that demonstrates the ability to independently perform work as a motor vehicle operator. My experience includes work such as operating trucks having a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 up to 32,000 pounds or more including a 10-yard dump truck and a 3000-gallon sewage pumper trick. It also includes towing equipment trailers loaded with a backhoe or other equipment on narrow, winding roads with a high volume of traffic. I can troubleshoot and take initiative to solve problems and accomplish work assignments in a safe manner. I have knowledge of a variety of technical trade terminology, tools, and equipment in more than one area. I possess a strong work ethic, dexterity and can perform strenuous work as required by the position. I have directed lower-level co-workers (laborers) in performing their duties. I manage assignments with virtually no supervision. My work is evaluated for efficiency and compliance with established policies, procedures, and instructions pertinent to the driving mission.

SCREEN OUT: You must possess a valid state driver's license by entrance on duty date.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: Moderate physical effort is needed by this position in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavy loads or a large number of people. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.

Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
