Duties

Help

  • Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.
  • Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools.
  • Perform minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions.
  • Perform minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures.
  • Perform routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools.
  • Operate a light truck to puck up supplies and to transport materials.
  • Clean and service chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities.

  • You will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT): You must be able to able to perform common maintenance worker tasks with experience in the maintenance, repair and construction of buildings and facilities in at least three areas such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, grounds maintenance and janitorial services under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level maintenance worker who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
  2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  3. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  4. Use of Measuring Instruments
  5. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
  6. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  7. Knowledge of Materials

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes re present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

National Park Service

Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site is located on what was known as the Mountain Route of the Santa Fe Trail in southeastern Colorado. Elevation is 4,075 feet above sea level. Summers are hot and dry with many days exceeding 100 degrees. Winter temperatures average around 40 degrees, but can drop below zero on occasion. Precipitation averages 11.5 inches per year with around 30 inches of snowfall annually. La Junta, Colorado, located 8 miles west of Bent 's Old Fort NHS, has a population of 7,000. Cost of living is considered low, with affordable housing for both sale and rent. The community of La Junta offers amenities such as schools (grades K- 12), a junior college, and the area's largest medical facility. La Junta also has a movie theater, a variety of restaurants, and several shopping options. Recreational opportunities can be found in the nearby Comanche National Grassland and John Martin Reservoir State Park.
