Summary

Located in the Facility Management Division, Utility Section. The Utility Section is comprised of multiple facilities which are located at the South Rim, Desert View, North Rim, Roaring Springs, Phantom Ranch, and Indian Gardens developed areas of the Park, and at other small, developed and undeveloped areas within the Park boundaries. You may be asked to preform work tours or assist with repairs on the North Rim or within the Inner Canyon. Travel typically does not exceed 10% of time

Help

-Operates and maintains potable and reclaim water treatment and equipment including: microfiltration equipment, pumps, valves, meters, monitors and chemical feed equipment
.-Operates and maintains wastewater treatment and collections systems such as: sanitary sewage lift stations, facultative lagoons, activated sludge wastewater treatment plants, aeration equipment, valves, meters, monitors and transfer pumps.
-Troubleshoots and repairs pumps, valves, meters, monitors and chemical feed equipment
.-Practices safe work techniques, use personal protective equipment as needed and practice good housekeeping so as to contribute to a safe working environment.

  • You must CURRENTLY possess and maintain a current Arizona Department of Environmental Qualify (ADEQ) certification or equivalent in one of the four disciplines (e.g., field of water, wastewater treatment, water distribution, or wastewater collection). You must submit a legible copy of your certification with your application.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally for work and training. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must possess a valid State Driver's license and must be able to acquire a State of Arizona Class B Commercial driver's license including endorsements for HAZMAT and for tanker truck operations within 6 months of employment.
  • May be required to occupy Government furnished quarters or trailer sites with the National Park, depending upon the work assignment location.
  • Will be required to respond to emergency situations or alarms at any time, thus is subject to call-out to respond to utility system issues and to assist others.

To qualify for this position you must meet both the Qualification requirement and the Selective Placement Factor as indicated below:


Qualification Requirement: To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT). Operates and maintains potable and reclaim water treatment and equipment including: microfiltration equipment, pumps, valves, meters, monitors and chemical feed equipment; Operates and maintains wastewater treatment and collections systems such as: sanitary sewage lift stations, facultative lagoons, aeration equipment, valves, meters, monitors and transfer pumps; Troubleshoots and repairs pumps, valves, meters, monitors and chemical feed equipment; Practices safe work techniques, use personal protective equipment as needed and practice good housekeeping so as to contribute to a safe working environment.
  2. Technical Practices (Theoretical Precise, Artistic).
  3. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.
  4. Use of Measuring Instruments.
  5. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, (includes blueprints reading)
  6. Knowledge of Materials.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Applicants must CURRENTLY possess and maintain in an active status an Arizona Department of Environmental Qualify (ADEQ) Certification or equivalent, in one of the four disciplines (e.g., field of water, wastewater treatment, water distribution, or wastewater collection). You must submit a legible copy of your ADEQ Certification or equivalent with your application. If you provide a legible copy of your certification/licensure which depicts a photo, your application will be screen out and deemed not eligible for consideration. DO NOT SUBMIT DOCUMENTS WITH PHOTOs. If the documentation is not submitted with your application you will be deemed as not meeting the selective placement factor and you will be removed from further consideration.

HELICOPTER CREWMEMBER CERTIFICATION: As applicable, the incumbent will be required to acquire a Helicopter Crewmember Certification in order to perform all work requirements associated with inner Canyon duties and pipeline repairs.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR §575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.


Physical Demands:Incumbent may frequently lift up to 50 and materials heavier than 100 pounds with the help of others, working under conditions of extreme heat 100 degrees F or -10 Degrees F in the winter, may requires hiking long distances on steep trails and to remote sites, requires considerable standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing and crawling. Work can be performed both during the day and night, exposed to weather elements including heat, cold, rain or snow.

Working Conditions: Incumbent may be exposed to insect bites, bruises, cuts, falls, burns and scrapes, will be exposed to raw and treated sewage, constant exposure to moving machinery and chemical feed systems and equipment typical of work performed in the water/wastewater industry. Must work around hazardous chemicals, gases, liquids and reagents, biological hazards, hearing and electrical hazards and other potentially dangerous conditions.

Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim) Housing Information: Permanent employees are eligible for government housing that is located within the park boundaries. If the employee's pay scale is WG-09 and higher, that employee can be assigned housing, only if housing is available. If housing is available and ready for occupancy, that employee can have family members accompany them. Permanent employees that are WG-08 and lower will be assigned to shared government quarters. And they will have a roommate or roommates. Employees in shared quarters cannot have family members or pets. Shared quarters will be furnished with government furniture and appliances. If quarters do not have laundry appliances, the park has provided a laundromat located in the old maintenance area. Permanent and term employees can move from shared quarters to other single family or singles quarters through the bidding system. To be awarded other housing options, the bidding system is based on time in service. time in the park, and paygrade.
