Help

The major duties of the Archives Specialist position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Professional archival work in appraising, accessioning, arranging, describing, preserving, publishing or providing reference service from public records and historic documents.
  • Responsible for a broad range of functions, including surveying, arranging, preserving, describing and providing reference services while simultaneously possessing subject area specialty area expertise for support functions in the records repository (e.g., architectural records, project documentation, writing technical guidelines, submitting grant proposals, and creation of 508 accessible documents).
  • Organizes, arranges, preserves, and maintains a major body of records, including providing necessary reference and research services from this body.
  • Provides guidance and recommendations in existing vocabularies and coded files in order to specify indexing and simplify retrieval.
  • Provides oral and written information in response to requests.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/22/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

To qualify for the Archives Specialist position at the GS-09 grade level, you must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience at this level must include all of the following: (1) assisting with processing, arranging, rehousing and describing archival collections according to professional standards; (2) establishing hierarchies and developing classification systems to facilitate access to archival materials; (3) authenticating and appraising historical documents and archival materials; (4) creating and maintaining electronic archives and databases for cataloging archival and manuscript collections; (5) assisting in writing technical reports such as project task directives, scopes of work, surveys, completion reports and finding aids relating to archival cataloging.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.

This position is located in the Denver Service Center (DSC).The DSC is the central planning, design, and construction project office for the National Park Service. DSC provides cradle to grave project management and delivery; from planning to construction. DSC works in every NPS region and in more than half of all parks in the National Park System. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy or large items (reports, drawings and boxes up to 50 pounds) must be lifted or moved on a routine basis. Storage and retrieval of standard and oversize items require use of ladders and stairs.

Working Conditions: The work is typically performed in an office setting. But occasional work may take place in parks, basements, attics, or warehouse settings. Work with dusty or moldy documents may require use of dust masks, gloves, or other protective devices. Identification of health and safety issues may be needed.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
