Duties

Help

The major duties of the Archivist include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Appraises and surveys records and develops processing plans for disorganized archival collections.
  • Arranges, rehouses, describes, and catalogs analog and digital records, and provides technical review of these tasks completed by interns and volunteers.
  • Supports research access and use of the collection, including onsite research room use and fulfilling remote requests for copies of materials in the archives.
  • Works with HFC staff, NPS sites service-wide, other governmental entities, researchers, and the general public in support of the NPS mission.

  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to fifteen (15) nights per year. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/28/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

In order to qualify for the Archivist series, 1420, you must meet the following basic requirements:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
-OR-
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values.

AND

To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience at this level must include all of the following: experience applying appropriate methods and techniques to archival arrangement and description of analog and digital records, including those related to housing, storing, and handling fragile and valuable materials; experience reviewing records for the purpose of acquisition, preservation, and use of archives; and experience researching copyright and other laws pertaining to published and unpublished records, images, and audiovisual materials. You must include hours per week worked.
-OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. You must include transcripts.
-OR-
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take percentage of education required for the grade level. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: Work requires mental alertness and mobility. Although often sedentary, work may include long periods of standing as well as activities demanding a moderate amount of physical exertion such as walking, climbing ladders, crawling, kneeling, lifting of heavy objects (up to 40 lbs.),bending, stooping, and reaching. The work entails the ability to concentrate for long periods of time with attention to detail.

Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in an office and within museum archives storage areas. The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions. Use of safe work practices is necessary because work requires the use of carts, cutting implements, and equipment with moving parts. For different periods of time, exceeding an hour, the incumbent will be required to work in an object storage room with temperatures of approximately 62 degrees F and a relative humidity of 45%. For shorter periods of time, the incumbent will be required to work in a cold storage vault with temperatures of approximately 45 degrees F and a relative humidity of 45%. There will be limited exposure to chemicals and machinery that will require safety precautions. Occasional travel for training and professional meetings may be required.
