These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year or 1730 hours (1730 hours only for positions identified in specific geographic locations). They may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

The parks and duty stations hiring for these positions are below. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for each park/duty station is listed below. These months vary due to weather conditions, project needs and/or funding.

  • Denali National Park and Preserve (the three duty stations for this park are Denali Park, Toklat and Denali County (Wonder Lake), AK): April - September
    • Applicants that apply to and are selected for Denali County will be duty stationed at Wonder Lake, AK
  • Katmai National Park and Preserve (King Salmon, AK): March - October
Positions may not be filled at every duty station.

Selectees may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries.

Duties for each park are listed below. These descriptions are not all inclusive.

Denali National Park and Preserve:

Primary duties include but are not limited to design, planning, construction, rehabilitation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of a wide variety of structures and utility systems. Provides technical advice and leadership to co-workers. Leads work crews involved in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, heating and utility system trades work. Performs inspections and collects information. Determines best work practices and materials to complete assignments efficiently in compliance with codes, regulations and NPS goals. Reads and interprets blueprints, code books, State and Federal Regulations and other technical information. Operates a variety of vehicles, machinery and equipment. Conducts safety training sessions and performs Job Hazard Analysis. Provides oversight of facilities and work processes to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations. Identifies and orders materials using a government credit card. Uses a government computer and computer programs such as Facility Management Software System (FMSS), Project Management Information System (PMIS), DOI Learn and Microsoft Office, including MS Word, MS Excel and the Internet. May work at a remote duty station.

Government housing may be available at the Denali Park duty station. Occupancy of government quarters is required for those that apply to and are selected for Toklat and Denali County (Wonder Lake), AK.

Katmai National Park and Preserve:
  • Develop and plan historic restoration to Park Facilities
  • Develop and plan workflow for park carpenter projects
  • Develop and plan park painting projects
  • Work with other NPS employees to complete carpentry project such as
    • Constructing seasonal housing units
    • Constructing or repairing decks and board walks
    • Removing and replacing windows and doors
    • Installing cabinets and display cases
    • Repairing or replacing roofing materials
  • Work with other Park employees to complete internal and external painting projects
  • Ordering supplies to accomplish assigned tasks
  • Receiving supplies and materials
  • Maintaining a safe job site
  • Ensuring that all required PPE is available at the job sit and used properly
  • Operating park vehicles and equipment
  • Maintaining park owned tools and equipment

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • You will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Occupancy of government quarters is required at Toklat and Denali County (Wonder Lake), AK.
  • For Denali National Park and Preserve, you may be required to obtain a water and wastewater treatment operators certificate after you enter on duty.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home from 5 -14 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749- 9 without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)
  2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.
  3. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  4. Use of Measuring Instruments
  5. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  6. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  7. Knowledge of Materials

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional information

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.

Salary subject to annual review and adjustment.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 or 1730 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

1730 Waiver Information: Only for approved positions in identified geographic locations, the Not to Exceed limit for seasonal temporary time limited appointments is increased to 1,730 hours which will be determined upon selection.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework except for during an emergency or natural disaster with prior supervisory approval.
