Temporary - 1039 Hours. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April - October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 25, 2021.
Work schedule
Full-time - You may be required to work evenings, weekends, and overtime.
The employee will assist aquatic research biologists with investigations of the biological and physical-chemical components of the park's aquatic ecosystem by carrying out sampling programs that require following established protocols. All sampling programs require the keeping of accurate records and the compilation of data. The most common duties performed will include a variety of field tasks such as fish sampling, water quality sampling, zooplankton sampling, sediment sampling, and general resource management. Data will be collected from a boat using various instruments, and water samples will be collected with assorted sampling equipment. Laboratory work including sample handling, preparation, and analysis will also be performed on a routine basis, and the employee will be responsible for keeping aquatic research equipment in optimum working condition. Voyageurs National Park is a water-based park, and travel by motorboat is required to conduct fieldwork. The employee must be physically able to hike distances of up to six miles (one-way) over rough terrain, carrying loads of up to 50 pounds. Data recording and management will also be integral to this position. The employee may have the opportunity to participate on field trips involving a wide variety of research.
The employee will need to work in a variety of weather conditions; weather can vary from near freezing temperatures with rain and snow in May to hot and humid weather in late summer. Pests including black flies, deer flies, mosquitoes, and ticks are common in this region.

Incidental Driving: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing biological work relating to the biological and/or physical chemical components of aquatic ecosystems or their subparts such as: water quality sampling; zooplankton sampling; sediment sampling; conducting aquatic environmental monitoring and management activities to document and assess environmental or natural resource conditions; fish or other aquatic animal presence, abundance, reproduction, management issues, and population dynamics; or other similar biological resource management and assessment activities using established protocols and standard scientific equipment; and that has included as a duty and responsibility data entry and data management using Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, ArcGIS, Pathfinder Office, or comparable software programs.

-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field of scientific or technical study, such as in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics, wildlife biology, or other directly-related subject matter. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to this position. (For example, fisheries biology aquatic ecology, limnology, plankton ecology, microbial ecology, phycology, malacology, aquatic resources management). You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified in B above (50% of the related coursework required). You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
