Duties

Help

This position will implement park management actions to coordinate and participate in scientific field activities addressing the recovery of endangered bird species, in particular, mosquito control and aviate malaria control.

  • Develop and prepare resource management plans
  • Identify native Hawaiian flora and fauna and habitat requirements
  • Measure and evaluate fauna
  • Prepare and organize data dictionaries, and Geographic Information System (GIS) related research plans
  • Apply scientific knowledge to write successful competitive proposals for funding
  • Identify non-native species
  • Oversee scientific collection of fauna
  • Use Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment to collect special data and associated attributes
  • Determine status and trends of special-status wildlife species (endangered, threatened, or species of concern)
  • Download and create GIS layers from GPS coordinates
  • Set and adjust short-term priorities and prepare schedules for completion of work for a team or work group
  • Work with professional staff to plan, coordinate, and conduct field research projects
  • Identify the effects of climate change on natural resources
  • Organize, manage and maintain a GIS database
  • Prepare written reports summarizing accomplishments and findings, ensuring that products are technically accurate and organized
  • Prepare and coordinate Forest Bird recovery implementation projects and monitoring plan and present findings at internal, public, and professional meetings
  • Coordinate the park's natural resource strategies and programs with adjacent lands in order to protect park resources

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

In order to qualify for this Biologist, GS-0401-11, you must meet BOTH the Basic Educational Requirement (One of the Options) *AND* meet the Additional Qualification Requirement stated below. Basic Education Requirement for Biologist GS-0401-11
Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, environmental science, or other disciplines closely related to this position. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts.

Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major (as based on the requirements of the university or college attended, or if this information cannot be obtained, 24 semester hours or equivalent), as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education related to this position. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position, and be comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts.

ADDITIONAL Qualification Requirement:

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: study, inventory, monitoring, restoration and management of a broad range of natural resources; vegetation, wildlife, exotic and pest species, sensitive species and associated ecological components such as air, water and soil. You must include hours per week worked.
-OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. This education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts.-OR-Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To determine if you qualify under this combination, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the specialized experience required; then determine your education as a percentage of the graduate education required (note: only graduate education in excess of the first two years is creditable for this combination); and then add the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
