Serves as a member of a fire effects monitoring crew. Establish and sample vegetation and fuel monitoring plots in a variety of vegetation/fuel types in accordance with established methodologies and guidelines. Independently, quickly and correctly identify grasses, sedges, herbs, shrubs, and trees to species in the field and records data accurately in the field. Enter data into computer or PDA using customized database software and verify data entry quality. The applicant may assist in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines. Use map and compass and uses and downloads digital cameras, GPS receivers, and PDAs. Although the incumbent's principle duties will be collecting and processing vegetation data, the incumbent may also collect weather and fire behavior data on prescribed fires, serve as a member of a fire crew, and/or will complete additional projects as needed. You will participate in prescribed fires, wildland fires, and out-of-park assignments. While assigned wildland firefighter collateral duties, you will serve as a member of a fire crew assigned to implement prescribed fire and suppress wildland fire. The work may involve fire line construction, the use of pumps and engines, installation of hose lays, mechanical removal of wildland fuels and all types of pre-suppression and prescribed fire preparation activities.
Physical Demands/Effort: Work is arduous and hazardous, involving emergency fire suppression field work, which requires physical performance calling for above average endurance and superior conditioning. The work requires strenuous physical exertion, including carrying heavy objects, running, walking, climbing, jumping, twisting, bending, stooping, hacking through underbrush, lifting more than 50 pounds and using heavy tools for long periods of time. These duties may include occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. The pace of the work is often dictated by the emergency situation.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed outdoors in a forest or rangeland setting where terrain ranges from flat and swampy to steep and rocky. Terrain is often covered with thick, tangled vegetation, or a variety of trees and grasses. Temperature extremes, smoke, and dust are frequently severe. The hazardous nature of the work requires the use of protective gear and clothing (boots, hard hat, nomex clothing, gloves, etc.). The work is typically performed in isolated locations which are often away from roads and water sources; camping is necessary for extended periods. Fire suppression involves risk of serious injury or death.
The Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test) is a method for assessing an employee's fitness levels for fire qualifications in the positions covered by this recruitment notice. Employees required to pass a WCT-Pack Test as a "condition of employment" will be provided one opportunity to pass the required test with a second chance provided, at the discretion of management, based on the results of the first test. This recruitment notice constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements. NOTE: Arduous fitness (WCT-Pack Test) will consist of completing a three-mile hike, within 45 minutes, while carrying a 45 pound pack. A time of 45 minutes, the passing score for the test, approximates an aerobic fitness score of 45, the established standard for firefighters. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirement. Probationary or seasonal employment is subject to termination for failure to meet the 25th percentile in each of the identified component being measured.

You will be required to meet the National Interagency Incident Management System Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide (PMS 310-1) requirements for any arduous duty position.
You will be required to meet the Federal lnteragency Wildland Firefighter Medical Qualification Standards for arduous duty wildland firefighting.
You will be required to attain and maintain the prerequisite physical stamina and strength needed to perform rigorous duties and must pass the Work Capacity Test at the arduous level annually.
Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/04/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs wildland firefighter collateral duties, and an Incident Qualification Card (Red Card) for an arduous duty position is required. To qualify for this position at the GS- grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: working as a member of a team or assisting with reading vegetation monitoring plots by identifying immature grasses, herbs, shrubs, and trees to species; assisting with field observations of glades, woodlands, and fens; assisting with collecting and reporting fire behavior and weather data relating to spread rate, flame length, and other fire prescription elements. You must include hours per week worked.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field of scientific or technical study, such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. At least 6 semester hours of this coursework was in subjects directly related to the work of this position, i.e., plant science, fire science, botany. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified in 1B above of which at least 3 semester hours were in plant/botany-related subjects, or fire science (50% of the related coursework required).
The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Indiana Dunes National Park is April through September, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
