The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 or 1730 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.

These positions are in the division of Visitor and Resource Protection. Incumbents are assigned to the Wilderness Branch as a climbing ranger. Climbing rangers are based in the Yosemite Valley with patrol locations ranging from high visitor use areas to remote wilderness areas.

Climbing rangers conduct several public outreach programs including Ask-A-Climber and Climber Coffee. The Ask-A-climber program interprets rock climbing in Yosemite by having climbing rangers interact with the public. Rangers provide informal interpretive programs focusing on big wall climbing and Yosemite's climbing history. During Climber Coffee, rangers meet with climbers and provide information on current route conditions, preventative search and rescue, wildlife closures, and Leave No Trace climbing principles. Climbing rangers perform basic maintenance on access trails and assist with larger scale volunteer trail projects. Climbing rangers also help oversee the daily activities of the volunteer climbing stewards. Climbing rangers may participate in search and rescue operations.

Physical Demands: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some case over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.

Working Conditions: The work in performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g. high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather.

Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 or 1730 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Yosemite National Park is mid April.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work..
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home and camp in wilderness areas of the park.
  • This position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.

Qualifications

SELECTIVE FACTOR:
1. This position performs climbing outreach and patrol duties, and expertise climbing 5.11 and A2 routes is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. In addition, the incumbent must possess a valid Wilderness First Responder or higher medical certification. You must provide a copy of your certification at the time of application or you will be disqualified from consideration.

2. Selectees must possess or be able to obtain a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or higher prior to entry on duty.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS- 04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked and months/years of employment for each position held.
-OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four full years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field. Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only education that exceeds the first 60 semester hours is creditable towards this requirement. To combine education and experience, first take the qualifying semester hours and convert the them to a percentage of the total requirement. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: park guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked and months/years of employment for each position held.
-OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate study in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours. You must include transcripts at the time of application.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the qualifying graduate level semester hours and convert the them to a percentage of the total requirement. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts at the time of application.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
