Duties

Help

  • The incumbent works directly with resource management specialists on historic cultural sites, structures, and landscapes.
  • Performs a variety of cultural resource tasks including historic structure stabilization and repair, cultural landscape restoration, care of historic orchards, and implementation of gravity flow irrigation systems.
  • The incumbent will work both with a preservation crew and independently, and will also work with youth crews at times.
  • Primary duties will also include rebuilding or fabricating historic windows and doors. They will be responsible for stabilizing, jacking, cribbing, and restoring historic log structures.
  • Position involves exposure to unpleasant climate conditions, sustained physical effort including hiking, hand tool work, chainsaw work and maintenance.
  • Must be able to operate Bobcat with experience with multiple implements, as well as operate four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • Must be able to carry weights up to 50 lbs, and will wear National Park Service uniform.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
  • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Minimally acceptable experience for the screen-out for the WG-4749-06 position is defined as perform common maintenance worker duties associated with more than one trade area such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, grounds work and other trades appropriate to this position without more than normal supervision. I take initiative to solve problems and accomplish work assignments in a safe manner. I have knowledge of technical trade terminology, tools, and equipment in more than one area. I have the ability to create material lists related to labor and costs of maintenance projects. Tasks assigned to me are inspected upon completion by my work leader or supervisor for conformance.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 or 1730 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: The incumbent performs work at construction sites. There is considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. There is considerable standing, stooping, and bending. Because of the multi-faceted craft aspects of this position, work is frequently performed under structures, which requires the incumbent to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties of this position and reflect actual restoration project environments. Incumbent is required to assist in the investigation of historic structures and work with other employees in restoration techniques. Inspections may require working in cramped, close quarters underneath structures or on rooftops several hundred feet above ground level. The incumbent occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more.

Working Conditions: Work is performed throughout the Park, where the incumbent is subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. In the shop, the incumbent is exposed to noise and sawdust in the air. The presence of lead paint on historic fabric may require special knowledge, handling, and use of protective equipment in the shop or at the job site. Work is performed both inside and outside, in all types of weather. The incumbent must work at elevations from sea level to above 4,000 feet. Temperatures vary from -20 to 90+ degrees. The incumbent may be exposed to snow and ice conditions in winter and rain and wind in summer. Incumbent must have and maintain a valid state driver's license. Considering the nature of historic structures and the unknown structural characteristics, field inspections may contain some hazardous conditions and the wearing of a respirator for asbestos, PCBs. rodent droppings, etc.
