Duties

Help
  • Prepare/review aquatic resource management plans for limnological and fisheries management, endangered species recovery plans, park planning documents, Resource Stewardship Strategies, Foundation Documents, and other aquatic resource annual reports.
  • Coordinate the park's fishery and aquatics management strategies with those on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad management protection strategies and minimizing human impact.
  • Program, track, allocate and has full responsibility for the aquatic resources branch budget, including ONPS and special initiative accounts such as endangered species, air and water quality and NPS soft funding accounts.
  • Review employee experience, capability, and the 'assignment complexity and assign duties, prepare training plans where appropriate, explain work requirements, methods and procedures.
  • Design, develop, test, and implement scientific monitoring protocols to identify, evaluate and conduct long-term monitoring of park aquatic resources.

BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT

To meet the Basic Qualification requirement for this position, you must submit a copy of your college transcripts (official or unofficial) showing the name of the institution attended, grade received and semester/quarter hours completed to document that you meet the below requirement. Failure to submit appropriate education verification will result in an ineligible rating.

Basic Education: Completed a bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours include at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.


ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

In addition to meeting the Basic Qualification Requirement shown above, to qualify for this position at the grade GS-12, you must possess:


Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) preparing, reviewing, and revising aquatic resource management plans; (2) coordinating fishery and aquatics management strategies; (3) providing technical assistance on a complex array of aquatic resource management issues; (4) preparing budget analyses for aquatic resources; (5) acquiring, maintaining, and tracking equipment and supplies necessary for an aquatics programs.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Physical Demands:
This position will require strenuous physical activities including periods of standing, walking, hiking, climbing and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. The employee must be physically capable of carrying out strenuous field work associated with sampling in streams, ponds, rivers, lakes and wetlands, frequently under adverse weather conditions such as rain, snow, high humidity, and excessive heat. This position may include the need to be SCUBA diver certified. In this scenario, you must have the ability to meet all physical fitness requirements outline by the NPS Dive Program. Work requires some walking and standing for long periods of time. Employee must have the physical stamina necessary to ascend and descend steep trails while carrying heavy loads and handle situations under adverse weather conditions (high winds, heavy snowfall, and icy surfaces).

Working Conditions: Work is preformed both indoors (approximately 70% of the time) and outdoors (approximately 30% of the time) in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, lake surface, and in humid wetlands during mosquito season. Outdoor work will include working from boats on the lake surface. Outdoor work will also include working in steep canyons with riparian corridors that have fast-moving water. Work will also include working in pond, marsh, and wetland areas that is in the areas considered Wilderness and far away from park roads and emergency response teams. The outdoor work environment is isolated and weather conditions can be extreme, with an average of 600 inches of snowfall annually. Employee also works indoors in laboratory and office environments. Field work is often performed under conditions of high risk to environmental exposure for prolonged periods of time including working with boats during periods of rough weather and lake conditions. Incumbent may work with hazardous caustic and toxic chemicals in the field and the laboratory. Special safety training, clothing and equipment may be necessary in both the field and the lab.

  • You may be required to work overtime.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • You will be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, OGE-450 on an annual basis.
