Summary

The primary purpose is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts, primarily in carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, cement finishing, and masonry. Work from sketches, work orders, basic blueprints, and instructions which are complete in terms of type of job required and materials and methods to be used.

The selectee performs or leads a crew of lower level co-workers in a variety of duties within the full spectrum of maintenance activities, including carpentry, painting, cement finishing, plumbing, roofing, electrical, masonry, janitorial, grounds keeping, roads, culverts, trails, corrals and fence repair. Performs maintenance on walkways and trails and performs construction and repair work on park's boundary fence. Performs carpentry work in performing repairs to buildings and quarters and in construction installing, repairing and replacing items such as doors, hardware, and cabinets; paints various types of structures, interior and exterior; performs plumbing tasks such as replacing unions and elbows, fixtures, and various types of pipe and copper lines; patches and repairs roofs; and/or responsible for monitoring wastewater and water treatment equipment and gauges in accordance with a prescribed schedule and performs routing tests. Performs grounds maintenance duties including mowing, fertilizing and watering lawns, and trimming trees and hedges. Uses common tools to perform a variety of basic repairs and maintenance, plus operates small gas and electric power tools such as disc grinders, sanders, saws, post augers, riding and push-type mowers, and weed trimmers. Employee is required to operate and maintain equipment and vehicles like farm style tractors, bobcat skid steers, backhoe's, pickup with trailers, air compressors, pneumatic hammers, plate compactors, pneumatic and steel faced compactors, motorized brooms, snow plows and pressure washers and must possess a valid state driver's license. Responsible for performing basic tests and measurements, and for selecting tools, deciding on methods and techniques to use, and carry out work with little or no checks during progress. For routine maintenance and repair jobs, the incumbent works independently based on oral or written guidance from the supervisor. He/She may also assist higher-graded employees with more complex building maintenance, road repair projects and other special projects. Maintains daily records of work and hours in accordance to park policy and submits to FMSS team in a timely manner.

Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work at: AGFO evenings, weekends, and holidays; THRO weekends, and holidays; BADL & WICA overtime.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A MAINTENANCE WORKER WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT). Perform work at the highest level in at least TWO of the following major trades of carpentry, painting, roofing, plumbing, or other related occupations. I have been responsible for the maintenance, repair and construction of facilities including historic structures and resources. I have knowledge of building trades, practices/standards, and building codes. I have been responsible for performing basic measurements, and for selecting tools, deciding on methods and techniques to use, and carry out work with little or no checks during progress. I have performed repairs to buildings and quarters and in constructing installing, repairing and replacing items such as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets; paints various types of structures, interior and exterior metal, and wood and masonry surfaces, wooden trim and new and old cabinets; performs plumbing tasks such as replacing hose bibs, valves, nipples, unions and elbows, fixtures, toilets, flush valves, faucets, and various types of pipe and copper lines; patches and repairs roofs consisting of built up tar and paper, metal, as well as foam roofs and asphalt shingles; I have been responsible for detailed layout, selection or tools and materials and for accuracy, completeness and adherence to standards. Have performed assigned tasks independently, with no technical assistance. Finished work is checked for adequacy by supervisor.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting Insects. If the incumbent of this position operates a motor vehicle (s) they must have a valid State Driver's License.
