This position located in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, in the Interpretation and Resources Management Division.

TERM positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed thirteen months, with possible extensions up to a total of four years without further competition.

MAJOR DUTIES: The incumbent will serve as a field archaeologist performing the following duties:
Provide support to implement the treatment specifications of the Carr Fire BAER plan to protect and mitigate the impacts to cultural resources from the Carr Fire. Activities include Archaeological Site Condition Assessments (NPS-11-ES), Assessed Historic Property Stabilizations (NPS-13-ES), and Archaeological Site Protection Patrols (NPS-10-ES); Cultural Resource Section 106 Compliance associated with other specifications developed for treatments as a result of the Carr Fire.

Perform basic archeological field work necessary to assess the fire and potential postfire impacts to cultural resources and determine if stabilization treatments will be necessary. Perform surveys, site documentation, and condition assessments; record data and prepare survey records; conduct excavation and testing of archaeological sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials. Communicate with, and assist BAER project leads to support compliance, monitoring and consultation requirements.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following basic requirements for the 0193 occupational series by the closing date of the announcement:

Successful completion of a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university that included: 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques); Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); or surveying; AND Archeological Field School; OR Related Curriculum: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archeological field school).
OR
B. Successful completion of a bachelor's or higher degree in related curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school). OR
C. Combination of education and experience. Creditable education is college-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. OR
D. Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, you must meet one of the following requirements to meet the minimum qualifications for this position at the GS-07 grade level by the closing date of the announcement:

A. One (1) year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level (GS-05), obtained in either the public or private sectors. . Examples of specialized experience include:
having conducted archeological investigations as an experienced crew member or crew chief; prepared reports on archeological site investigations; conducted surveys using GPS mapping techniques and preparing GIS maps and overlays; and having experience conducting historical archeological field investigations and report preparation.
B. Successful completion of one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field (e.g. Archeology). OR
C. Combination of Experience and Education- To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 18 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal 100% to qualify using this option.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking and bending often required. Heavy items such as backpacks weighing 40-50lbs must be lifted and carried on a regular basis. Backcountry operations may require hiking with a full pack for 10 or more miles in a day, sometimes across off-trail areas. Archeological survey work may be carried out steep, isolated terrain. Incumbent must be able to hike on rough, obscure trails, and be able to navigate cross-country using a map and compass. Excavations may require strenuous physical exertion and heavy lifting.

Working Environment: Approximately 60-75% of the work is performed in the office. Survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring work is performed in park areas, often these are located in the backcountry. The incumbent may be required to work independently to complete fieldwork projects in isolated and rugged areas. The incumbent must be familiar with outdoor safety and survival skills and must be able to operate a vehicle on rough roads.
Backcountry operations are usually limited to the summer season, although fieldwork may occur year round and limited backcountry operations may be required at any time of the year. Incumbent must be able to operate effectively in the backcountry for extended periods (7-10 days). Project areas vary from rugged coastal settings, to heavily forested river valleys, to steep subalpine and alpine landscapes; therefore the incumbent needs to be knowledgeable about the hazards of working in each setting.
