Duties

Help

This is a permanent staff position for the National Park Service (NPS) Southeast Region natural resources Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Division. The incumbent serves as the Inventory and Monitoring Program Manager for the Cumberland Piedmont Network, a group of parks with similar natural resources. The Cumberland Piedmont Network is responsible for implementing systematic long-term monitoring and assisting with natural resource inventories. The long-term monitoring focuses on ecological and management indicators of resource condition, called "Vital Signs," including cave bats, cave crickets, cave aquatic biota, forest vegetation, and water quality. The incumbent's duties consist of program management, long-term monitoring, data analysis, developing monitoring reports, and the implementation of resource monitoring activities in a broad range of specialized fields. These fields may include: botany, geology, chemistry, forest ecology, aquatic ecology, fisheries, wildlife, and ecosystem dynamics.

Qualifications

You must meet one of the following basic education requirements and specialized experience by closing date of this announcement:

Basic Education requirements:

For Biologist 0401 series:
Possess a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR
Possess a combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

For Ecology 0408 series: Possess a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester/45 quarter hours in basic and applied biological sciences. I have also completed at least 9 semester/14 quarter hours in ecology and 12 semester/18 quarter hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

For Physical Science 1301 series: Possess a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR
Possess a combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Specialized Experience:

Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include duties such as: Plan, initiate, direct, and manage a complex, interdisciplinary, scientific program of landscape or regional scope and significance. This includes planning and developing natural resource monitoring protocols for geographically large and remote natural landscapes.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated.

Education

To meet the basic education requirements, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet basic education requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
