These are Full-Time TERM positions. Appointment to these positions will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed thirteen months, with possible extensions up to a total of four years without further competition.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Duties

Help

The primary duties of this position are to participate in the control of feral animals (e.g. deer, goat, and pig) in the Park. The work includes ungulate fence construction, inspection, repair, and maintenance; various pest control projects at the Summit and Kipahulu districts of Haleakala National Park; and locating, capturing and removing feral animals using various control methods and techniques (e.g. aerial pursuit, firearms, dogs, traps, baits, snares, etc.) This position requires carrying and using firearms in order to protect oneself from dangerous feral animals (deer, goats, and pigs). The incumbent of this position will also serve as Resource Project Helicopter Manager who will manage helicopter operations as related to Aerial Capture Eradication and Tagging of Animals (ACETA) Missions, and other pest controlling work.


Haleakala National Park is located on the Island of Maui, approximately 30 miles from Kahului, the island's largest commercial center (population approximately 25,000). Park headquarters is located at 7,000 feet elevation where weather is often cool, wet and windy. Summer temperatures vary from 50 - 70 degrees and in winter range from the low 30's to mid 60's. Complete shopping and medical facilities are available in Pukalani/Makawao area, about 19 miles from park headquarters. Elementary schools are located in Kula, Makawao, Pukalani, and Haiku. High schools are located in Pukalani, Kahului and Wailuku. Public transportation is not available to the park; personal transportation is essential. Rental prices for an average 1-bedroom cottage range from $900-1200/month, $1600-1800/month for a 2-bedroom cottage, and $2400/month for a 3-bedroom house. Purchase prices for a home begin at about $750,000 and range considerably upward.

  • Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Drug Testing: This position is subject to drug testing based on the collateral duty requiring firearms in the back-country or other locations for non-law enforcement reasons such as protection from animals.
  • Driver's License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Work Schedule: You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Trial Period: You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • Overnight Travel: You may be required to spend between 140 and 150 nights per year in the backcountry (remote work/travel). You might require obtaining a government charge card for travel purposes.

Physical Demands: Requires the incumbent to lift and carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds; carry backpacks containing five days' worth of supplies; hike up to 15 miles per day; ride in helicopters to remote locations; camp in the Park back country; regularly walk through densely vegetated rainforest or over rough lava terrain; hike in remote areas along steep cliffs and lift, carry, and operate power tools such as chain saws, and rock drills weighting over 75 pounds for eight hour periods.

Working Conditions: Required to work outdoors 80% of the time. Working conditions range from wet rainforests to dry deserts, at temperatures ranging from 27 degrees (F) to 90 degrees (F). Elevation gradients range from sea level up to 10,000 feet. Work conditions in rainforest are wet, muddy, and very slippery. Footing on lava flows is uneven, unstable, and brittle. Incumbent is frequently required to drive or hike over rough and/or steep terrain, to camp out in very wet or hot/dry conditions, and to operate power tools with sharp fast moving parts and loud motors in remote areas and on uneven terrain.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
