Duties

Help
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks associated with construction, maintenance, and/or repair of park- and field office-related facilities, including assisting Equipment Operators to complete site work.
  • For buildings and facilities, provide general repairs and maintenance: electrical, lighting, and power systems; HVAC systems; water treatment systems; work equipment and tools.
  • Utilize construction skills to repair basic wood structures (shelves, tables, kiosks, fences, door/window frames, walls, etc.), and to repair basic plumbing systems (toilets, faucets, water heaters, drains, etc.) including underground pipes.
  • Maintain grounds and landscaping by operating a variety of hand and power tools in park landscape and maintenance work, including snow removal.
  • Maintain a supply warehouse by ensuring supplies are on hand including cleaning supplies, paper products, water, and fuel. Receives incoming supplies and accounts for inventory, maintaining an orderly warehouse and ware yard.

  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • You will be required to maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • You are expected to complete certification and/or training to use equipment such as trailers including dump trailers, 4X4 pick-ups; skid-steer loader with bucket, auger and other attachments and tractor operation.
  • Incumbent is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a community public water system and must become certified (licensed) as a system operator within 1 year of appointment.
  • Required to wear BLM work uniform; allowance provided.
  • As needed, provides backup in the absence of other site managers

Qualifications

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include:

(1) carrying out preventive maintenance and repair of grounds, buildings, and related fixtures without supervision; (2) operating vehicles, equipment, or various materials to perform maintenance work; (3) ordering supplies including cleaning supplies, paper products, water, and fuel either by phone, online, and/or through contracting; (4) utilizing automated equipment hardware/software, data, systems and applications to collect, enter, manipulate, update, and maintains data in order to accomplish the duties of the position.

Physical Effort: Field operations are a large component of this position. The physical ability to carry moderate loads, hike over semi-rough terrain, drive a 4X4 truck pulling a trailer, operate equipment, and use power and hand tools. The work requires walking, stooping, bending, and lifting. Physical demands require coordination for hand, eye and body. The incumbent must exert physical effort related to actions such as lifting (10-100 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying objects of various weights, sizes and shapes, walking, climbing, crawling and bending.


Work Environment: Work is performed in all kinds of environments from an office setting to project sites in rough and/or slippery terrain. Field work involves vehicular and foot access and may involve accessing remote areas. Temperatures may range from below Oto over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather may include periods of rain, snow and heavy winds. Wearing of the authorized BLM uniform is required during field work.

Employee must have the ability to work outdoors in both hot and cold weather and during periods of snow, intense wind, and rain.

Employees must have the ability to carry moderate loads and lift up to 100-lbs., hike and work in rough terrain and steep slopes.
Work is frequently performed outdoors in temperature and weather extremes including heat, cold, high winds, dust, poisonous plants and wild animals, etc.

Employee is expected to use and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while working with noisy equipment, using power and hand tools, when using chemicals and paints in cleaning and other maintenance and construction activities.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

  • This is a permanent, career-seasonal position. You will be in pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 12 months per calendar year. When work and/or funds are unavailable, you will be placed into non-pay status. Pay status may be less than 6 months during initial appointment.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
