There are 5 positions in this announcement. All positions will be appointed for a minimum of an initial 13-month term. 4 positions will be eligible for extension up to a total of 4 years, and the 5th position may be extended up to a total of approximately 3 years, 8.5 months.

  • Serves as a Pest Control Worker in the construction and replacement of barrier fences in natural areas to manage non-native mammalian and invertebrate pests.
  • Serves as a Pest Control Worker that assists in the control of invasive plants, plant diseases and pest invertebrates in natural areas. Implements chemical and manual techniques and determines optimum control schedule to effectively manage target species.
  • Safely handles, mixes, applies, maintains, and stores chemicals and pesticides, tools, machinery and equipment in compliance with OSHA,EPA, NPS and all applicable federal state and local laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Serves as a Pest Control Worker in the controlling of non-native wildlife in park management units.

You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.

  • This position is subject to drug testing based on the collateral duty requiring firearms in the back-country or other locations for non-law enforcement reasons such as protection from animals.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 8 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
  • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Physical Demands: The work requires moderate to heavy physical effort such as lifting and carrying materials and equipment often weighing 75 pounds or more, 15 miles a day or more. The job requires working outdoors, walking/hiking cross country and camping in remote backcountry and in all kinds of weather conditions. The duties require considerate and often strenuous physical exertion such as bending, stretching, and pulling, stooping, kneeling, climbing, standing, walking and hiking in difficult terrain. Fence construction requires both gross and fine motor coordination and strength for twisting wire, unrolling hog wire, carrying loads of t-posts, and other tasks. While working in certain situations incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing this is hot, uncomfortable and burdensome. The risk of heat-related illness is significant.

Working Conditions: The work is 90% outdoors. Occasional indoor work is sedentary and requires sitting or standing for long periods of time. When working outside, work is performed in a variety of vegetation types, elevations and conditions. Terrain ranges from flat to steep, rocky, possibly slippery, muddy, covered in cinders, lava rock, or where vegetation is sparse or dense. Work is occasionally performed in cold, rainy, weather and often in extreme heat or cold. On a daily basis, the worker applies pesticides while wearing appropriate PPE, which may include respirators, gloves, Tyvek suits, and other personal protective equipment designed to reduce the risk of exposure to toxic dusts and sprays which might damage their health. Wearing PPE may be hot, uncomfortable, and occlusive to ventilation and movement. Power tools required for work assignments may have sharp and fast-moving parts with loud motors. When responsibilities require using cutting tools such as chainsaws, machetes, or handsaws, appropriate PPE including chaps, gloves, eye, ear and head protection may be required. The worker may be exposed to poisonous insects, wild disease-carrying animals, or plants. Work assignments sometimes require flying in and working around helicopters. The Park is in an area of active volcanism and seismic activity. Frequent earthquakes, volcanic activity in visitor use areas and a tropical environment with 20-150 inches of rain a year. Caustic fumes are present in varying concentrations and are known to be hazardous to persons with respiratory or heart conditions, infants and pregnant females. The long-term effects to healthy person are unknown. When responsibilities require working in an environment where such gases cannot be avoided the incumbent may be required to use a respirator in compliance with the park's Respirator Use Program.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
