Help

  • Manage and maintain preservation, security and fire protection, and storage conditions for park museum collections, archives, and libraries.
  • Provide overall professional and technical direction and priorities for the museum collection program, ensuring NPS and professionally recognized collections management procedures are applied in all operations.
  • Maintain all recordkeeping and documentation for museum collections and maintain collections management data using service wide systems according to service wide standards.
  • Develops strategic plans, work plans and schedules, project statements, deaccession plans, scopes of work, cost estimates and proposals to justify funding requests and accomplish goals.
  • Provide technical support for museum program and mentors volunteers and technician staff members.

Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 4 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/08/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-09/ and GS-11 grade level, you must possess the basic requirement and the additional experience and/or education by close of the announcement:

BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR MUSEUM CURATOR GS-1015-09/11 SERIES:

1. Degree:
museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field. -OR-
2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in (1) above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination demonstrates that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above. (You must provide transcripts in your application). -OR.
3. Experience at least four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in (1) above

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GS-9:
You must possess at least one of the requirements below to qualify for this grade:


EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: .implementing professional and technical administration of museum and archive collections, Assisting in planning and implementing museum program priorities.; Ensuring NPS and professionally recognized policies and procedures are applied in all operations; implements proper curatorial procedures and provides technical direction for accessioning and deaccessioning, land management, internal and external research requests; research necessary to authenticate museum objects or associated copyright information, integrated pest management, basic preservation principles for museum collections and archives, monitoring collections environment, and museum database management including interior Collection Management System (ICMS)/Re: Discover or similar programs such as, (Past Perfect, Argus, etc.). This experience must demonstrate substantial knowledge and experience implementing core museum tasks. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree.. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GS-11:
You must possess at least one of the requirements below to qualify for this grade:


EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Working independently, plan and manage complex museum and archives projects for the museum programs, including project planning, budget tracking, and personnel management. Developing baseline documents including Collection Management Plans, Collection Storage Plan, Archival Surveys, Scope of Collection Statements, and Museum Emergency Plans, writing project funding statement (Grants), Long-term planning and management of museum collections at a park, regional repository, or similar museum facility, ensuring standard practices, methods, and techniques to preserve and/or conserve collections of museum material are implemented and followed. This experience must demonstrate a broad knowledge of and experience with applying professional theories, principles, practices, and techniques of museum collection management and, overseeing the work of others which includes assigning and reviewing work. You must include hours per week worked. Professional fields of studies and expertise must be pertinent to the park's resources and themes. tracking, and personnel management; Developing baseline documents including Collection Management Plans, Collection Storage Plans, Archival Surveys, Scope of Collection Statements, and Museum Emergency Plans; Writing project funding statements (Grants); Long-term planning and management of museum collections at a park, regional repository, or similar museum facility; Ensuring standard practices, methods, and techniques to preserve and/or conserve collections of museum material are implemented and followed. EDUCATION: Successful completion of three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in museum work or applicable subject-matter field. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. To compute this percentage, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed higher-level graduate educaiton semester hours of educastion (that are in excess of 36 semester hours) by 36. Add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: Only higher-level graduate education in excess of more than two-years may be used to qualify for this position. You must include a copy of your transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

CTAP/ICTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR ยง575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: The work requires mental alertness, better than average manual dexterity, and mobility. Although primarily sedentary, inspections and operations evaluations involve activities demanding a certain amount of exertion such as walking, climbing, crawling, lifting of heavy objects, bending, stooping, and reaching. Working with collections can involve prolonged exposure to hazardous materials and equipment. Working with lighting systems, environmental control systems, and alarm systems can involve exposure to electrical current and the use of power tools with physical hazards. The work entails the ability to concentrate for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in an office and storage or laboratory facility. Frequent visits are made to the library, visitor center, and other museums in the park. The incumbent makes occasional field trips to the backcountry. Some travel to other facilities and museums, as well as to training and professional meetings is required.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
