Help

As a Supervisory Physical Scientist within the Upper Midwest Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Supervisory/managerial duties are effectively carried out in order to support the Department's capacity to manage its programs in a results-oriented, customer-focused, and efficient manner.
  • Manages a team of scientists and technicians- supervises project work and assists and directs project chiefs in managing individual project budgets and execution of water resource projects including laboratory analysis.
  • Pursues project development, coordinates annual technical review, and ensures that projects are developed in collaboration with other scientists to address societal issues and are consistent with USGS strategic goals.
  • Plans, proposes, directs and conducts a variety of water-resource studies to accomplish UMid WSC program objectives and supports the national mission and strategic plan of the U.S. Geological Survey. Incorporates knowledge of chemistry, biology, ecology, microbiology, and biogeochemistry in water-quality and hydrological studies related to environmental health. Studies range from small local scale to large National efforts.
  • Develops and maintains cooperator relationships. Provides data and technical information to cooperators, stakeholders, and the public for the advancement of scientific understanding and knowledge.
Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary with occasional physical activity including walking, climbing, and bending as required during field reconnaissance of an area or site. All duties must be performed consistent with USGS and other government safety policies and practices.

Work Environment: Most work is performed in an office setting, although there is occasional field work, which involves a low degree of risk when conducting on-the-ground assessment of operations as well as exposure to moderate discomfort from such extremes as heat, cold, and inclement weather.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-13:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level:

One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Examples of such experience may include planning, executing and reporting on original physical science studies or ongoing physical science studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, physical scientists have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
