Help

The major duties of the Interdisciplinary Biologist/Ecologist/Botanist/Horticulturist position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs a wide range of duties related to planning and implementing park facilities and natural resource revegetation projects , functioning as a revegetation specialist involved in the preparation and review of implementation plans, contracting documents, and scopes schedules and budgets.
  • Provides technical advice to project managers and division team members related to principles of vegetation and restoration ecology, best management practice for vegetation management implementation projects, and issues related to plant materials selection as it relates to National Park Service policy.
  • Performs as a revegetation specialist on interdisciplinary teams of professionals. Collaborating within the division and with contractors, park, and other agency staff members from diverse professional backgrounds.
  • Accountable for the implementation of revegetation projects that meet project goals, adhere to budget requirements, meet timelines of project and budget needs, adhere to National Park Service policies for plant material usage including appropriate genetic identity of plant utilized for revegetation projects, and utilize best available science for restoration and revegetation activities.
  • Seeks and utilizes relevant National Park Service policies, best available science, available datasets, expert opinion, and division experience and data to develop implementation plans and contracts and to make recommendations to project managers, project teams, park staff, and partner agencies.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/21/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

You must meet one of the following Basic Requirements in any series to be eligible for this position:

General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series 0401Series Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.- or-
  2. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Ecology Series 0408 Series Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
Botany Series 0430 Series Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany. -or-
  2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Horticulture Series 0437 Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: horticulture; or a related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post harvest handling of horticultural crops.-or-
  2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
If you do not meet these basic requirements, you will be considered not qualified and will not receive consideration for this position.

To qualify for this position you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

GS-11
  • SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes all of the following: Experience selecting, using, monitoring or studying plants and plant materials, which includes the use of native and horticultural plant materials in landscaping and revegetation activities and Working in multidisciplinary teams to scope, design or deliver projects. -OR-
  • EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. You must include transcripts.-OR-
  • Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.
GS-12
  • SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes all of the following: Successfully implement projects that rely on and integrate the principles of plant revegetation and principles of botany, horticulture, restoration and/or vegetation ecology and successfully work in a multidisciplinary teams to develop or assist in the development of management plans, vegetation plans, monitoring plans, or contract documents related to resource management issues.
  • There is no substitution of education for experience at this grade level.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: Although most of the work is sedentary in nature, frequent field inspections, investigations, or surveys may involve considerable walking, hiking, bending, and carrying of gear and equipment.

Working Conditions: Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office. Travel may be frequent and involve the normal risks and discomforts of automobile, bus, rail, or air transportation. During field trips, the incumbent is often outdoors and may experience weather extremes, insect bites, varied topography, and other physical demands.
