Help

This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

  • Presents established and new curriculum-based education and distance learning programs for diverse audiences that range from K-8 on-site (in the park) and off-site (classroom and community), and other youth group organizations. Use appropriate education standards and techniques, adapts programs to audience needs, and practices safety procedures to ensure participant safety.
  • Collaborate and communicate with teacher, educators, park staff (frontline and other divisions), park partners, other youth organizations, and non-profit organizations from Maui County and visiting schools from other counties in Hawaii to schedule curriculum-based programming.
  • Assist in evaluation of educational programs and assess overall audience understanding, effectiveness, quality, activities, methods and techniques according to the National Park Service's Second Century Strategic Plan, the park's Long Range Interpretive and Education Plan, Hawaii's Department of Education, and Next Generation Science Standards.
  • Assist in training park staff (frontline and other divisions), interns, and volunteers to assist in preparing and presenting curriculum-based education and distance learning programs and activities, engagement of students, and safety practices. Assist in organizing and presenting training workshops for teachers, educators, park partners, and other youth organizations to prepare them for field trip logistics, to conduct pre and post visit activities, to support the National Park Service and the park's interpretation themes, and to promote stewardship of the park's cultural and natural resources.
  • Organize, maintain, inventory, replenish, and coordinate repair of equipment and materials used in presenting education programs. Suggest appropriate procurement of supplies for education programs. Assists in the printing of and digital materials for education programs by writing, editing, updating, and producing curriculum, brochures, student handouts, workshop announcements, bulletins, assessment and evaluation materials, and promotional and public relations like Social Media.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/07/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: Must have language proficiency in Olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian Language) and English reading, writing, and speaking skills. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: developing and presenting education programs to school groups, writing and editing educational materials for teachers; implementing and training others in educational technology and distance learning programs for student groups; managing a residential camp program of youth groups; working as a teacher; maintaining professional dialogues with schools, teachers, students, parents, and other visitors; communicating effectively orally, electronically, and in writing. You must include hours per week worked.
-OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree in any course of study. (To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before entrance on duty.). You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement) and 1 academic year of study beyond the second year from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education), equals 100% of the total requirement. You must include hours per week worked and must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

CTAP/ICTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Physical Demands: Work is primarily at high elevation in alpine desert environment in or near visitor centers, trailheads, and contact stations. Hiking is on rocky and uneven, unpaved trails and terrain at elevations of up to 10,023 feet for 1-3 hours at a time as needed for programming. Work up to 8 hours a day in one of the two remote visitor centers at elevations of either 7,000 or 9,740 feet. Occasionally, work may be performed at the Kipahulu district of the park in hot, wet, muddy and humid weather near the coast.

Perform administrative work indoors to develop and prepare for programming. This work requires talking on the phone, walking, speaking, field instructions, and traveling by a government vehicle to remote areas with winding roads. working with school groups, teachers and other park partners is intellectually and or physically demanding. there may be long periods of standing and occasional heavy lifting for community events to set up and break down equipment and or multi-day trip wilderness backpacking trips of up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work primarily performed outdoors is at high elevations of 7,000 - 9,740 feet from subalpine shrubland to an alpine desert landscape. Weather can vary, changing quickly to cold, wet, and windy conditions including snow. Occasional work performed in the hot, wet muddy and humid weather near the coast at sea level - 8 feet. Standard operating procedures such as occupational health and safety plan, inclement weather and hazardous tree are in place to keep employees, partners and visitors safe. Indoor work at a computer involves sitting or standing for long periods and is in a crowded environment.
