This position is in the National Park Service's (NPS) Information Resource Management Directorate (IRMD), National Information Technology Center (NITC), Enterprise Hosting Branch (EHB). This position supports the NPS cloud and on-premise data center infrastructure, systems and services. The position is located in Reston, Virginia.

Help


The major duties of the Information Technology Specialist (SYSADMIN) position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for interpreting IT and IT Security policies, standards and requirements to engineer, deploy, administer and maintain enterprise IT infrastructure and services.
  • Evaluates current on-premise systems/services and designs solutions leveraging available cloud capabilities.
  • Diagnoses and resolves unique, unusual and complex problems in response to customer reported issues.
  • Remediates or mitigates vulnerability and compliance related findings.
  • Identifies technical or process improvements and problematic trends in system administration and/or service delivery.

Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this Information Technology Specialist (SYSADMIN), 2210-13 grade level, you must possess all of the following basic requirements by closing date of the announcement:

Basic Requirement:

  • Have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management.
-OR-
  • Have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified in item A, and which required the development or adaptation of applications, systems, or networks.
-OR-
  • Have paid or unpaid information technology related experience demonstrating (or specific, intensive information technology training in) all of the following four competencies:
    • Attention to Detail
    • Customer Service
    • Oral Communication
    • Problem Solving
To qualify for this Information Technology Specialist (SYSADMIN), 2210-13 grade level, you must ALSO possess all of the following minimum qualification requirements by closing date of the announcement:

Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Your resume must include hours per week worked.
  • Specialized experience at this level must include all of the following 1) Experience in enterprise hosting administration, including the design, configuration and sustainment of enterprise scale hosting technologies (e.g. Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware, Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager and Microsoft Azure, Amazon WebServices); 2) Experience with hosting hardware (e.g. hypervisor clusters, high availability servers) and disaster recovery/backup solutions; 3) Experience supporting data and/or application migrations; and 4) Experience using Powershell or comparable scripting language to automate tasks associated with Microsoft technologies. Your resume must include hours per week worked.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary. Some work may involve travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. Some employees may carry light items such as papers, books, or small parts, or drive a motor vehicle. The work does not require any special physical effort.

Working Conditions: The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions. Some employees may occasionally be exposed to uncomfortable conditions in such places as research facilities.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
