Duties

Help

As a Historian, GS-0170-12, with the National Park Service (NPS), your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • The selectee will perform work as a Network to Freedom - Underground Railroad Coordinator directing an intricate program of historical and other cultural resources activities that involve sensitive and complex issues of African American and the History of the Northeastern United States, including guiding the research of others, that may impact a wide variety of parks, buildings, historic sites and facilities.
  • Collaborates with the other Interior Region 1 Network to Freedom-Underground Railroad Coordinators, Regional Program Coordinators and the National Program Staff.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and monitors cultural resources and their associated communities, identifies potential threats, and makes recommendations to management regarding status and mitigation of impacts (present and future).
  • Provides professional and technical assistance as an expert in African American History, History of the Northeastern United States, and African Diaspora History to cooperators.
  • Reviews historical research on the Network to Freedom-Underground Railroad project proposals, scopes of work, and task directives prepared for planning and other management purposes, including resource management plans.
  • Carries out Network to Freedom-Underground Railroad program management duties by developing work plans and schedules, scopes of work, cost estimates, and proposals and/or grants to justify funding requests and accomplish goals.
  • Develops and implements long range plans for the inventory, evaluation, documentation, preservation, research, and interpretation of the historical and other cultural resources within the appropriate mission, objectives, and resources contexts.
  • Coordinates historical and other cultural resources strategies and programs in National Park Service Interior Region 1 with activities on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad protection strategies and minimizing human impacts.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/29/2022-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

In order to qualify for the Historian, GS-0170-12 position, you must meet one of the following basic education requirements:

1. A undergraduate or graduate degree in History.

OR

2. A undergraduate or graduate degree in related field that included at least 18 semester hours in History.

OR

A combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major in History, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in History.

PLEASE NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts, or a complete list of college courses taken that identifies each course, college or university, semester or quarter hour earned, grade received, and date completed. If you fail to submit, your application will not be considered, and you will be rated ineligible.

In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level (obtained in either the public or private sectors) developing, implementing, evaluating and researching projects, studies and planning community-based initiatives related to African American History, either History of the Western or Northeastern United States, and cultural resource management. These include:

  • Directing program research centered on African American History and other cultural resource activities that involve sensitive and complex issues that may impact a wide variety of parks, buildings, historic sites and facilities.
  • Developing and implementing long range plans for the inventory, evaluation, documentation, preservation, research, and interpretation of the historical and other cultural resources.
  • Coordinating historical and other cultural resources strategies and programs with communities and activities on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad protection strategies and minimizing human impacts.
  • Identifying, evaluating and monitoring cultural resources to identify potential threats, and making recommendations to management regarding status and mitigation of impacts.
To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST:

2. Must reflect work schedule as full-time and/or part-time and the total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time or part-time).
