This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
As a Museum Technician you will,
Identify, independently sort, and classify objects that are similar to previously identified objects. Catalogs museum objects and enters cataloging data into the designated NPS catalog program.
Perform routine cleaning, stabilization, or preservation of artifacts whose treatment does not require a high degree of specialization.
Ensure that all loan agreements, renewal forms, insurance certificates, shipping papers, and related documentation are completed and properly signed.
Monitor the environment of the collection storage and exhibit areas by keeping records on temperature, relative humidity, and pest infestation.
Give specialized tours or talks dealing with the museum collection, museum storage, and exhibits.
Perform a variety of clerical operations in support of the museum.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided..

You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology. Specialized experience may also include processing incoming and outgoing loans, independently utilizing archives and museum collections to provide answers to research requests from the public and staff, and overseeing the work of interns and volunteers in storage areas and in cataloging the museum collection. . You must include hours per week worked.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or equivalent) with coursework related to the duties of the position. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above which total at least one year. For example, 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the specialized experience listed above) and one half year of graduate level education in coursework related to the field (9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours equaling 50% of the education listed above) would qualify an applicant for this position. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required.

Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in a museum environment of exhibit and storage areas,
workroom/laboratory, and offices. Occasional work with materials which are dusty or stored
with protective chemicals may require the use of dust masks, gloves, or other protective devices.
