Help

This position works on items and structures such as building additions, framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, interior and exterior trims, staircases, trusses and beams. Spacing and fit are essential and as well as structural soundness and appearance. The work requires the incumbent to cut a variety of regular and irregular sizes, shapes and angles and must achieve exact horizontal and vertical trueness, precise fits and joints, structural soundness and' an attractive finished appearance. Projects are planned and carried out from initial layout to completion.

These positions are Multiple Schedules temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year with potential to be extended for an additional one year for a maximum of two years based on agency needs and potential funding.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Occupancy of government quarters may be available.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • This position has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and your work schedule is subject to change from part-time to full-time to on-call as workload dictates.

To be considered qualified for this Carpenter position, you must possess the qualifying work experience, as well as the identified selective/screen-out factors, outlined in this announcement and referenced in the occupational assessment questionnaire attached to this announcement. No specific length of experience is required. However, your application must show sufficient experience and training to indicate that you can perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

For WG: Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate the rough experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Examples of experience for this position include: completing construction, repair, and modification tasks involving items and structures such as framework, rafters, concrete forms, walls, doors, finished paneling, staircases, trusses, beams, where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance are important. Perform carpentry (construction, rehabilitation, installation, and assemble) work using advanced shop mathematics and by reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, and building codes.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You must meet level 2 on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions: Works at benches or while materials are on support which would require considerable standing, stooping and bending. Also works on ladders and scaffolds requiring overhead reaching and working in awkward positions. Must occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Work is done indoors and outdoors. Some work is performed in the shop area where incumbent is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, saw dust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. Incumbent is also exposed to the hazards of ladders and scaffolds and is subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. Incumbent is required to use protective devices such as earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, etc.

CTAP/ICTAP - Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
