As a Supervisory Hydrologist, or Supervisory Chemist, or Supervisory General Engineer within the Observing Systems Division, Instrumentation Evaluations Water Quality and Hydraulics Section Chief, some of your specific duties will include:
Manage the evaluation program for water quality instrumentation that ensures Water Mission Area staff have state-of-the-science technology and quality assured instrumentation.
Plan and establish work schedules, deadlines, and standards for acceptable work; coordinate and integrate contractor work schedules and processes with work of subordinates or others; track progress and quality of performance; arrange for subordinates to conduct any required inspections.
Develop and manage the quality-assurance testing of hydrologic instrumentation related to water quality monitoring.
Serves as the WMA's subject matter expert for all water-quality instrumentation.
Conduct studies and author comprehensive, authoritative technical reports on the results of instrumentation testing and developments.
Presents findings at scientific and technical meetings and communicates to a broad range of audiences.
Physical Demands:
The work is primarily sedentary and occasionally requires some physical exertion. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do most of the work. Occasionally however, walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items (under 50 pounds) is necessary. In addition, there will be periodic visits to, and tasks performed in, laboratory and field settings with greater physical demands and moderately hazardous conditions such as working over and around water, traffic and wildlife.
Work Environment:
The work is usually performed in an office setting which is air conditioned and heated seasonally. Occasionally work is performed in a field location. During the time spent in the laboratory and field, the employee is subject to a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions. This work involves moderate risks that require special attention to safety precautions. The laboratory work may involve exposure to irritating chemicals. Special safety precautions are required, such as: safety gloves, masks, gowns, and shields.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original studies in the field of hydraulic, civil or mechanical engineering, or any other related engineering discipline. The studies carried out require novel approaches to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologist, Chemist and General Engineers have extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of their particular discipline and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
